TranscriptThe Custer encampment near Hidden Wood Creek. Notice how well the wagons are organized to be able to leave on a moment's notice. Education, as we know it, was non-existent in this territory before the eighteen eighties. No one had time to be educated because they were too busy prospecting for gold, growing crops, or trapping. The only education that most men wanted was to learn quicker and better ways to find gold. As the territory progressed, and as the Black Hills region gained in notoriety and population, the leaders of the mining industry, civic-minded citizens of the various communities, and county representatives in the legislature saw the ideal location for an educational institution of mining in the Black Hills. Deadwood and Keystone both wanted the institution because they offered an opportunity for mining engineers to learn "on the spot" and the nearness of their own mines would give practical experience in mining.
