| Description | In 1963, the University of South Dakota began constructing fallout shelters on campus. These shelters were located beneath Norton Hall, Brookman Hall, Noteboom Hall, Burgess Hall, East Hall, Dakota Hall, and Julian Hall. The education building, Slagle Hall, Union Building, science center, and Armory also had fallout shelters connecting to the tunnel systems. In addition, USD was granted $39, 885 by the Civil Defense Office of the Department of Defense for training in shelter management and radiological monitoring. |
