| Transcript | Outstanding Recent Graduates Honored Five SDSM& T alumni were honored as Outstanding Recent Graduates during a recent Engineers Week luncheon. Seniors also were initiated into the Order of the Engineer at the luncheon. The Outstanding Recent Graduate Program was established to honor SDSM& T graduates who, within 10 years of their graduation, have achieved exemplary career progress. The recipients are considered excellent role models for current students. The 1998 honorees are: Susan K. Burnet-- Electrical and Computer Engineering: After graduating from SDSM& T in 1987, Susan ( Janovy) Burnet ( EE) worked for Alcoa as a Project Engineer in Davenport, IA. She and her husband then started their own company, IMS, which provides radiometric measurement equipment to the steel and aluminum industry. IMS is the leading supplier of equipment for measuring on- line, real- time, profile, thickness, flatness, width, contour, and shape of flat and tubular products. Timothy R. Harter-- Mining Engineering: During the past ten years, Tim Harter ( MINE ‘ 87) has held many positions in engineering and management. He has been directly involved in start- up operations at four underground mines and one mill, which resulted in his becoming the youngest manager in Nevada. The backfill techniques he pioneered are currently in use at the major underground mines in Nevada. Andrzej ( Andrew) Kaczmarski-- GeolE and Mechanical Engineering: A native of Poland, Andrew received degrees in both Geological and Mechanical Engineering. An engineer with Shell Oil Company in New Orleans, he has made significant advancements to Shell Oil Company's technology of developing oil and gas fields. Responsible for the design and construction of drilling and production systems totaling $ 50 million, he also has helped contribute to the success of four $ 1 billion Tension Leg Platforms. Jeffrey E. Shield- Met. Eng.: Jeffrey Shield ( Met ‘ 87) has been very successful in teaching, research and outreach at the University of Utah. His research specialties include the microstructural development of materials during processing. His teaching emphasis has been in the characterization of materials, including x- ray diffraction and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. He has developed a course to introduce engineering to freshman students and increase retention rates. He also has been a leader in outreach efforts to area high schools. Byron E. Wolf- Chemical Eng.: Byron E. Wolf ( Chem E ‘ 87) has spent his entire career with Dow Corning in Midland, MI. His positions have included engineer, development engineer, design engineer, senior chemical engineer and development specialist. Currently designated as Product Steward, he has become the " voice of the customer" within Dow Corning for the silicone elastomer medical materials product line. His choice of technical advancement rather than management has been a rewarding one for him and for Dow. ==================================== Tech Names New Football Coach Ron Richards has accepted the position of head football coach and will begin his new duties on March 16. He replaces Rick Fiala who resigned last November. Richards has been offensive coordinator for the past 13 years at Montana Tech in Butte, MT. During this time his offenses have rewritten the record book by breaking all but two school records. This past season Montana Tech was statistically the best offensive team in the NAIA ( 521 YPG & 38.8 PPG), won the Frontier Conference, and reached the quarterfinals of the post- season playoffs. The Orediggers were also league champions in 1996 and played for the NAIA Division I National Championship that year. " We are very pleased that Coach Richards has accepted our offer to be our head football coach, " said Hardrock Athletic Director Hugh Welsh. " Ron will bring a world of experience and maturity as well as an exciting offensive scheme to our football program." Richards and his wife, Debbie, are parents of two sons. Ryan is a junior at Northern Colorado University where he plays football and Rory is a fourth grader who also enjoys sports. A graduate of the University of Montana, Richards received his Master's degree at Western Montana. A welcome luncheon will be held on Monday, March 16, at 12: 00 noon in the Surbeck Center Ballroom on the SDSM& T campus. |
