| Transcript | r Motion Morion C. Smith, 80 died Friday, Oct. 10.1997, al Los Alamos Medical Center in Los Alamos, after a brief ^illness. Morion was born to Albert and Ida Smith, September 15, 1917 in Selby, SD. Smith had been a resident of Los Alamos since 1954 when he began his employment with Los Alamos National Laboratory. Smith was a metallurgical engineer with degrees from South Dakota School of Mines and Lehigh University. From 1939 to 1954, he was a college teacher, industrial and research metallurgist, engineering consultant, and technical author in Alaska, Montana. Missouri, New MexicoandColo-' rado. In 1970, he co-invented the hot dry rock concept of producing energy from artificial geothermal systems, and in C. Smith 1973 he became the first group leader oftheLANLGeothermalGroup. Asa result of this work he was selected in 1974 as "Distinguished Scientist of the Year" by the New Mexico Acad- j emy of Science. Smith held several patents and was the author of two textbooks and a large number of published articles, papers, and reports. He was a Registered Professional Engineer and a Fellow and Life Mcm-berofthe American Society of Metals. He is survived by his wife. Lois; four : children: Sandra Lee and her husband, Lester, of Las Cruces, Lynn Magmder j and her husband, Richard, ofj Pmnedale, Calif.; Kelvin Smith, and i his wife, Alicia Dyers-Smith, of Albuquerque; and Christopher Smith and j his wife, Cynthia, of Ruidoso Downs, j N.M.; six grandchildren, and one great-j grandchild. |
