| Transcript | New volleyball coach looking to add stability to program By Jeff Budlong, Journal staff | Friday, August 07, 2009 RAPID CITY --- Tiffany Mastin-McCampbell is looking to provide the South Dakota School of Mines volleyball program stability as the Hardrockers build a tradition of success. Mastin-McCampbell was hired to lead the Hardrockers in March, after former coach Beth Honaker resigned the position. Mastin-McCampbell believes Mines has the ability to be a strong player in the Dakota Athletic Conference, but with three head coaches coming to the program since 2007, it will take time to get where she wants to take the Hardrockers. ���We want to be the best we can be five years from now and 10 years from now, " she said. "We will look at what steps we can make this fall to make this a great team, but also what we can do to make this team great five or 10 years from now. We really want to be able to leave a legacy." Mastin-McCampbell said the foundation has been laid by her predecessors, Honaker, who had the Hardrockers in the conference tournament championship game two years ago, and Doug Tabbert before her. Now, it is her job to take it to the next level. "A lot of it comes down to recruiting and recruiting the best kids we can here to Mines, " she said. "It can be a big challenge to find females that want to be engineers, but you can find them, you just have to go nationwide. For me, that is finding the right kid athletically and academically, that also plays club volleyball, plays year-round and is really going to come in and impact this team." Mastin-McCampbell comes to Rapid City after a two-year stint at NCAA Div. II Missouri Western State University. She relished the chance to get back to the NAIA level, where she was during her playing career at Taylor University in Indiana. "I played NAIA volleyball, so the smaller school atmosphere attracted me, but with a very good academic setting, " Mastin-McCampbell said. "I love the great academic standards here, where you have a different kind of student-athlete. You have a different focus with the kids, where they are here to play volleyball and get a great education, too." Mastin-McCampbell has been impressed during the spring with how humble her team is and willing to learn her system as they prepare for the new season. "We will continue to improve our defense, and then I am putting in an offense that is a lot faster and get them comfortable doing it, " she said. Mastin-McCampbell will have just one senior on this year's team with the return of Katherine Hanson, who will be asked to help lead seven incoming freshmen. SD Mines does return several other younger players that gained valuable experience off a team that went 12-16 last year. Hanson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) has impressed her new coach with her desire to finish her career strong. Injuries slowed Madisen Lane (Fort Collins, Colo.) during her freshman year, but Mastin-McCampbell can see good things for her outside hitter in the new season. "She is a very strong and powerful kid, " Mastin-McCampbell said. "Madi is a kid that has shots, and she is strong. Katherine and Madi should be two of the better hitters in the conference.��� Becky Keilholtz (Gwinn, Mich.) and Reanna Roberson (Windsor, Colo.) will be important players with experience at setter and libero, respectively. "Becky did really well in the spring, " Mastin-McCampbell said. "We just want to continue to build her conference, and we have a freshman coming in, and she will play because we will run a 6-2." The new coach began her first fall practice on Sunday as she met with the team and began preparations for the season opener at the DAC/Frontier Tournament in Billings, Mont., on Aug.28 and Aug. 29. |
