Photo by Brad Blume By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines football team put its best foot forward to start its 2009 campaign as the Hardrockers defeated the Montana Tech Orediggers, 25-22 in overtime Saturday night at O'Harra Stadium in Rapid City, S.D. It is the third season in a row that the ‘Rockers have won their opening game of the season. There were plenty of heroes in the game which proved to be one of the biggest wins for SD Mines in recent history. Montana Tech is in the very competitive Frontier Conference with the five-time NAIA national championship Carroll College program. Two of the more interesting items from Saturday's game was the play of standout linebacker Everett Brill (junior from Elko, Nev.) who not only did a great job on defense tallying 12 tackles, 2.5 for a loss and adding 1.5 sacks, but also on offense when he was used in goal-line situations. Brill proved to be a very aggressive and powerful runner, as he pushed his way into the end zone for two scores. He ended the game with five carries for 11 yards. The other point of interest came from junior place kicker Andy Smith (from Pierre, S.D.) who kicked the game-winning field goal in overtime. He connected on a 19-yard chip shot for his very first game-winning score. More interestingly is that Smith was a converted soccer player who has only been playing football for two seasons. Sophomore running back Jamie Dale (Alpine, Calif.) led the ground charge for the Hardrockers tallying 40 yards on 16 carries while junior Dustin Meneley added 21 yards on four carries. Sophomore quarterback Nick Russell finished strong in the game completing 24-42 passes for 209 yards and one touchdown. SD Mines other score came from senior Jason Beilstein (Lodi, Calif.) who caught a TD reception in the second quarter on an 11-yard strike. ‘Rockers earn big OT win to open 2009 season On the defensive side of the ball, sophomore Eric Yeash (sophomore from Louisville, Colo.) was a major contributor. He led the Hardrockers in tackles with 18, three for a loss, had one pass breakup, recorded a sack and blocked a Montana Tech field goal in overtime to set up the SD Mines victory. Junior Tom Lunzman also came through for the Hardrockers, intercepting a pass in the end zone in the third quarter and also was the team's second leading tackler with 17 and broke up two passes. Along with Brill's 1.5 sacks, junior defensive back Dana Mellage was also credited with a sack. The Hardrockers have a couple weeks off and will next see action Sept. 19 during homecoming week. It is also the start of the Dakota Athletic Conference schedule as SD Mines takes on Dakota State in a 1 p.m. game. Lady Hardrocker Volleyball BILLINGS, Mont. --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team has started out the season on its heels, dropping all four of its matches at the Frontier/ Dakota Athletic Conference Cross Over Tournament hosted by Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont., this past weekend The Hardrockers fell to Rocky Mountain College, University of Montana-Western, Montana Tech and Carroll College. "We struggled a little bit with consistency as far as where we are going (as a team), " said Lady Hardrocker head coach Tiffany McCampbell. "We have changed around a few things offensively and defensively but we are learning quickly. There was a big disparity at this tournament. You could really tell the teams that have already played four matches the weekend before to us being our first weekend of competition (referring to the Frontier Conference teams)." Against Rocky Mountain, the ‘Rockers were defeated, 25-15, 25-17, 25-16. Hardrocker junior Paige Corcoran (Pierre, S.D.) paced her team with five kills and was 13-16 on the attack and had two solo blocks as well. Teammates Karina Garber (sophomore from Torrington, Wyo.), Jessie Guthals (freshman from Colorado Springs, Colo.), Madi Lane (sophomore from Fort Collins, Colo.) and Katherine Hanson (senior from Sioux Falls) all posted four kills in the match. In the Montana Tech match, The Orediggers defeated SD Mines, 25-20, 25-15, 25-12. Hanson, Corcoran and Guthals all tallied five kills each while libero Reanna Roberson led the team in digs with six and Lane recorded five blocks in the match. In the Carroll College bout, the Lady Saints won the match, 25-18, 25-12, 25-15. Hanson had a strong offensive effort going 22-24 on the attack with seven kills, had one ace and two blocks. Roberson again recorded the most digs with 11 and freshman Alex Mader (from Miles City, Mont.) came through with 12 assists from the setter position. Against University of Montana, the Bulldogs won, 25-15, 25-23, 25-20 Hanson again paced the Hardrocker offense with six kills and was 18-19 on the attack while Lane also contributed with six kills and was 17-19 on the attack. Sophomore Becky Keilholtz (from Gwinn, Mich.) had a fine effort as the setter with 11 assists in the contest. "We saw them grow as a team and as our level of consistency gets better I think people will see that we are going to be a better team, " McCampbell said. "Right now it's just trying to work out the kinks and getting our freshmen use to the fast paced offense." The Lady Hardrockers are back on the road this weekend, traveling to Mitchell for the Mt. Marty/DWU tournament Friday and Saturday. |
