W. 2, 688 MAY 8 2002 Universal Information Services Speaker urges CSC grads to become leaders Chadron State College President Tom Krepel and graduation speaker Richard Gowen visit before the Saturday morning ceremony. The speaker at Chadron State College's spring commencement on Saturday urged the graduates to become leaders in solving the challenges faced in what he called "the heartland of America." Dr. Richard Gowen, president of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, said that while the heartland is the food basket of the world, it is faced with a declining population and shrinking enrollment in many schools. "I implore you to step forward as the leaders we so desperately need to guide the creation of new solutions to the challenges of our heartland, " Gowen said. "We need you to bring the experiences you have gained through this college, together with the experiences you have "I implore you to step forward as the leaders we so desperately need." Gowen said a leader must view unwanted changes not as problems, but as opportunities. "I ask you to have the courage to walk to a different drummer, to think outside of the box, to take the path less traveled, " he said. "To become a leader who is willing to reach inside to your experiences and create new solutions." Gowen noted that the tragic events of Sept. 11 created numerous new leaders as people bonded together and stepped out to help others. "I have learned that the greatest achievements are made when you have the courage to convert what some see as problems into powerful opportunities for change�opportunities to excel, " the speaker said. A member of the World Wide Web-based education committee, Gowen said the technology is available so that each student can learn at the pace and with the assistance needed so they will achieve at the fullest possible level of his or her individual ability. He said this technology is "waiting for the teacher, that innovative leader who is ready to guide the final development of this educational revolution, " Gowen said technology is also available to let those entering business to respond to the needs of each individual customer "whether in Chadron or the other side of the world." |
