South Dakota Tech has had a ROTC unit since 1950. Under the agreement, Chadron State students may travel to Rapid City for training and earn up to 34 hours of ROTC credit that will transfer to Chadron State. There are no tuition charges for the ROTC training. AFTER graduating from college, those completing the ROTC requirements are eligible to be commissioned as second lieutenants in the National Guard, Army Reserves or active Army. "This is another partnership that provides for more opportunities for our students, " said Dr. Merlyn Gramberg, vice president of academic affairs at Chadron State. "We are grateful to be a part of the program." LL Col. Thomas Peck, professor of military science at South Dakota Tech, said the program provides valuable leadership training and has been used by many students to help them obtain a college education. The program has various training options. FRESHMEN and sophomores may apply for two and three-year scholarships, which cover tuition and fees, up to $450 per year for books and a $150 stipend a month while attending school. Those enrolling must participale in four hours of ROTC instruction per week during the school year. Those "contracting" with the program to receive commissions are obligated to attend a five-week advanced camp during the summer between their junior and senior years. Opportunities to attend air bourne and air assault schools also are available in the summers. The contracts must be signed by the beginning of the junior year. Chadron State is the third satellite of the South Dakota Tech unit. The others are at Black Hills State National College. Altogether about 90 students are enrolled with 25 of them pursuing commissions, Peck said. Full details of the program may be obtained by contacting Capt. Tom Finch, the program's enrollment and scholarship officer at 605-394-2769. Dr. Sam Rankin, president of Chadron State College, signs the agreement so CSC students can participate in the ROTC program at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City. Looking on is Lt. Col. Thomas Peck, who heads the program at South Dakota Tech.
