| Transcript | Record Chadron, NE Cir. 3, 255 APR 12 1994 UNIVERSAL Press Clipping Bureau Chamber orchestra coming to CSC The Vivaldi Travelling Circus is not really a circus with lions, tigers and elephants. Rather, it's a small, but elite, chamber orchestra, and it's coming to Chadron State College for a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 14 in Memorial Hall. Based in New York, the orchestra specializes in music written by Antonio Vivaldi in the 18th Century. Its feature number is "Vivaldi Gloria." Promotional material for the orchestra states that the orchestra is for people "who seek joy, adventure and excitement, color and virtuosity in their music." THE ORCHESTRA is directed by Gene Forrell, who attempts to involve area musicians in the concerts. Dr. Sheryl Linch, who joined the CSC music faculty this year, will play the trumpet with the orchestra. In addition, the orchestra will accompany the choirs from Chadron State, Black Hills State and South Dakota School of Mines and Technology as they join forces during the second portion of the concert. The choirs from the three institutions have been holding a joint intercollegiate choral festival the past four years. About 80 voices will be included this year, half of them from CSC. THE FEATURED violinist for the Vivaldi orchestra is Eric Grossman, who has Chadron State roots. His father, John, is a native of Alliance and graduated from Chadron State in 1961 with a degree in music education. The elder Grossman taught music in the Sioux City Public Schools for 18 years. At one time he directed three high school orchestras. Young Grossman's mother, Marlene, took post-graduate work in music at CSC while her husband was completing his degree. In addition, Mrs. Grossman's mother, Ann Bouska Brooke, and an aunt, Marcella Bouska Horges, were students at the college in the 1920s. ERIC GROSSMAN graduated from high school at the North Carolina School of the Arts and then studied at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and Juilliard School of Music in New York. He has been a part of the Vivaldi orchestra for two years. He will be featured on J.S. Bach's "Double Violin Concerto in d minor" during the concert Thursday night. One of the highlights of Grossman's career has been playing violin solos on the nationally televised "Hour of Power" from Robert Schuller's Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, Calif., twice in the past two years. The concert will be a part of the Galaxy Series, which is supported by grants from KN Energy and the US West Foundation. Admission will be $5 for adults, $3 for youths through high school and $2.50 for senior citizens. Those with CSC ID cards will be admitted without charge. |
