Clipping Bureau Box 2230 Brookings, SD 57007 SEP 30 1999 Brandon Valley Challenger South Dakota government works for quality education in technology One year ago all the public schools in South Dakota were visited by inmates. These men and women installed computer and electrical wiring as part of a project called "Wiring the Schools." Now that the wiring has been completed, it's time for the next phase, "Connecting the Schools." It began this summer when each school district in the state sent a representative to the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in Rapid City for a month-long workshop on computer networking. The state government has provided a high-powered Compaq server to each school in the state along with 24 port networking switches for every 200 students in a district. Each of the servers comes with a Windows NT software, tape backup, uninterruptible power supply, and Internet filtering software. The state of South Dakota is in the process of becoming an Internet service provider. This will allow each school in the state, no matter how remote, to have Tl or better access to the Internet. Along with providing Internet service, the state will also host school web pages and e-mail accounts for each faculty and staff member. All middle and high schools in South Dakota will also be provided with the hardware and software to set up a two-way video teleconferencing classroom studio. These facilities will permit students to access innovative and unique programs, workshops, curriculum and faculty wherever they are located in the state. With all this taking place in every community across South Dakota, it's going to be an exciting year. Gov. Janklow and the State Legislature are taking bold steps to be sure that all South Dakota children have access to a high quality, technology-rich education that will prepare them for success in the next century.
