Saint Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701-3995 Phone: (605) 394-6082/2554 • Fax: (605) 394-6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Breanna Bishop, Public Information Coordinator, (605) 394-6082 School of Mines to Host Forum on War in Iraq A community forum entitled "Iraq: What Should We Do?" will be presented Sunday, Dec. 4 from 3-5 p.m. in the Surbeck Center Ballroom on the School of Mines campus. Dr.Ahrar Ahmad, professor of Political Science at Black Hills State University, will offer a brief overview of the historical context of Iraq. Sen. Stanford Adelstein, representing a stay-the-course position, and Dr. William Hughes, representing a planned withdrawal position, will offer statements on current U.S.-Iraq policy. Jeffrey Hannah of Rapid City Regional Hospital will moderate the question and answer session. The forum is free and open to the public. Dr. Ahrar Ahmad received his PhD from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. At Black Hills State University, he teaches courses in Comparative Politics and International Relations. His research interests include the development and role of the Third World state, post-colonial studies and comparative religions. State Senator Stanford Adelstein, president and CEO of Northwestern Engineering Company, NWE Development Company and NWE Management Company, has served the region in a wide range of economic development, cultural and philanthropic enterprises. For several decades he has been involved with such agencies as American Israel Public Affairs Committee and American Jewish Committee. His military experiences include Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army, December 1999 to December 2004, and participant in several National Security Seminars. He was an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, both active duty and reserves. Dr. William Hughes is retired vice president for Academic Affairs at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. A professor of electrical engineering, Dr. Hughes has served as a consultant to the United States and 20 other foreign governments on energy development. Studying the history of religions, particularly Christianity, Judaism and Islam, has been an avocation of his for almost five decades. The Black Hills area group Bridges for Intercultural Understanding (BIU) is organizing the forum. The group's mission is to facilitate public dialogue on intercultural issues, both global and local. A grant from "The People Speak: America's Role in the World" sponsored by the United Nations Foundation helps support this event. Co-sponsors include the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Rapid City Regional Hospital's Cultural Diversity Committee, the Rapid City Journal and the Rural Ethnic Institute. |
