The School of Mines was one of 22 institutions of higher education to receive the grant and one of only nine to receive the full funding amount of $75, 000 per year for three years, with an equivalent match from the school. "The need for these new programs is great [nationwide]. Last year alone approximately 900, 000 youth had made plans to commit suicide during their worst or most recent episode of major depression, and 712, 000 attempted suicide during such an episode of depression, "SAMHSA Administrator Charles Curie said. "These new grants were made possible through the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act for youth suicide prevention programs signed by President Bush last October and will help invigorate our national effort to prevent suicide." School of Mines Director of Counseling and ADA Services Jolie McCoy reports that her office sees a number of students every year for depression, anxiety or suicidal thoughts or attempts. The SAMHSA grant will fund the School of Mines Suicide Prevention Program which features a four-pronged approach to suicide prevention by promoting overall mental health and decreasing the stigma and barriers to getting help for mental health issues. The components of the program are prevention education among students, gatekeeper intervention training among staff and faculty, assessment and treatment for students in crisis and program evaluation. The program will be supervised by McCoy and operations will be coordinated by Scott Wiley, who was hired as Suicide Prevention Coordinator by School of Mines under the Student Affairs Division. The program will collaborate with other student services and organizations on campus, as well as with community entities like the Campus Community Prevention Coalition which addresses substance abuse, and the Front Porch Coalition, which promotes public awareness, prevention and survivor care of suicide. External program evaluation will be provided by the Institute for Educational Leadership and Evaluation, a project of the Chiesman Foundation, a nonprofit research, program evaluation and public policy education organization. -30- |
