Saint Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701-3995 Phone: (605) 394-6082 • Fax: (605) 394-6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Breanna Bishop, Public Information Coordinator, (605) 394-6082 School of Mines and Partners Propose 2010 Project The School of Mines, the City of Rapid City and the Rapid City Area School District have proposed a 2012 project under the program Civic Improvements component to install high-quality, state-of-the-art artificial turf in O'Harra Stadium in order to further enhance the athletic facility. The original 27 member citizen committee recommended to the City Council that the $280, 000 requested for the project be included in the 2012 funding plan. There are many benefits of synthetic turf, including safety, all-weather playability, intensive use and low maintenance. Currently, approximately 22 turf events per year are scheduled at O'Harra Stadium. By the end of the year, the field is typically in very poor condition. If it rains early in the year, the turf is in poor condition for the majority of the year. The proposed turf will be in the same condition for every game, regardless of the weather. More than 50, 000 fans attend football games, track and field events, soccer matches and other events at the School of Mines O'Harra Stadium each year. For both Rapid City's high schools and for the School of Mines, the stadium is an exciting place to demonstrate athletic excellence and build the skills needed for success. The upgrade of O'Harra Stadium's field surface to field turf will be the final piece in making Rapid City's outdoor stadium a first-class facility. It will allow us to keep pace with recent community stadium upgrades in Sioux Falls and Aberdeen. The durability of this surface will provide an outstanding playing field regardless of weather condition or time of year and will allow even more events to be held, including local middle school, freshmen and junior varsity football games, a benefit to both the athletes and the more than 50, 000 spectators that fill the stands each year. The improved stadium will be an opportunity to attract additional regional events, bringing outside dollars and sales tax revenues to Rapid City and its business community. The total cost of the project is $700, 000. The School of Mines will provide $140, 000 and the Rapid City Area School District will provide $280, 000, making a total 2012 request of $280, 000. The annual costs of operation and maintenance are estimated at $20, 000 and will be provided by the School of Mines and the School District. #30# |
