Saint Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701-3995 Phone: (605) 394-6082/2554 Fax: (605) 394-6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 20, 2005 Contact: Steve Buchholz, Public Information Manager, 394-6082 Universities Host AISES Conference The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Black Hills State University and Oglala Lakota College will host the AISES (American Indian Science and Engineering Society) Region V conference from Thursday, April 21, through Saturday, April 23. More than 200 AISES members from the upper Midwest and Canada will attend the event. Those attending will hear lectures about space exploration, medical research, environmental science, neutrino research, alternative energy, hydrology, and other areas of science and engineering. They also will visit Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, and Wind Cave National Park. Jerry Elliot, an Osage-Cherokee who is a NASA engineer at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, will deliver a keynote address during the conference banquet that begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn in Rapid City. A wacipi will be held Saturday, April 23, at Black Hills State University. The grand entry begins at 7 p.m. The American Indian Science and Engineering Society is a national, nonprofit organization that nurtures building of community by bridging science and technology with traditional Native values. Through its educational programs, AISES provides opportunities for American Indians and Native Alaskans to pursue studies in science, engineering and technology. The trained professionals then become technologically informed leaders within the American Indian community. The organization's ultimate goal is to be a catalyst for the advancement of American Indians and Native Alaskans as they seek to become self-reliant and self-determined members of society. #30#
