The competition required the Rapid City students to develop and perform an eight-minute radio play, complete with a commercial break and a news bulletin, using any subject matter they chose. The news bulletin was part of the challenge — each team had just one minute prior to performing to prepare a news story to go with a headline created by the judges. The skit performed by School of Mines team took place on the back of "Boomer the Dog." The characters — played by Dan, Tom, and Anne Pfeifle, Hannah and Patrick LaMarine, and Tony Smoragiewicz — were all fleas. In the story, war has broken out between the fleas and ticks, and the fleas' blood bank has been raided by unknown thieves. The plot thickens when the hero's "flea-ancé" is discovered to be... a tick! The team captured first place in the middle school division, earning extra credit for the creative use of puns, props and sound effects. The entire cast performed their parts without scripts, something expected only at the high school level. The team also won the Da Vinci award, offered "for exceptional creativity, a unique approach to the problem and/or risk taking." According to the citation, "this is Destination ImagiNation's most prestigious award and should not be given lightly." The team practiced and polished their performance for months before the competition. They built the set and props, designed and created the costumes, and wrote the script and music, all without the help of adults. Jane Pfeifle served as team manager. Destination ImagiNation is an international organization for kindergarten through college students and community groups. Its purpose it to teach life skills and expand imaginations through team-based creative problem solving. #30# |
