St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( January 2, 1998) SOUTH SHORE NATIVE ESTABLISHES $ 1, 000 SCHOLARSHIP AT SDSM& T South Shore native Jerry Johnson, a true philanthropist, remembers where he started and now wants to help young people from his hometown area help themselves. Johnson, who now lives in Burlington, Vermont, has established a $ 1, 000 scholarship to assist one senior annually from South Shore High School who wishes to attend the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) in Rapid City. Jerry graduated from South Shore High School in 1966 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from SDSM& T in 1970. He started his career with New England Telephone, Boston, MA in the engineering department immediately after graduation and held various supervisory jobs until he accepted a position with Bell Communications Research ( Bellcore) in 1983. After four years n New Jersey with Bellcore, Jerry returned to Massachusetts with NYNEX. In 1990 Johnson was appointed General Manager, Network Engineering responsible for the New England region of NYNEX and subsequently assumed responsibility for New York as well. In 1997, Jerry accepted an early retirement offer from NYNEX and has started a second career as President and Chief Operating Officer of Hill Associates, Inc. ( hill. com) in Vermont. Hill Associates develops and delivers technical training to the telecommunications industry. Johnson is on the Board of Directors of MassPEP, an organization that helps prepare middle and high school students from under- represented groups for college students leading to careers in science and engineering. He is also a member of the Vermont Business Roundtable and serves on the Board of Directors of the Vermont Telecommunications Application Center. Jerry and his wife, Karen, have a 20- year- old daughter who is a junior at Brown University majoring in Economics and twin 17- year- old sons who are seniors in high school. Under the criteria established by Mr. Johnson for his scholarship, first preference will go to an entering freshman at SDSM& T from South Shore High School. The recipient is to be majoring in math, engineering or a science field. If equally qualified candidates are available ( i. e., more than one South Shore senior accepted at SDSM& T), the student with the highest grade point average or highest test scores for entering freshman is to be selected. Mr. Johnson wants to give the young people from his home town the opportunity to attend the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. If there are no students from South Shore enrolled as a freshman or sophomore in any given year, the scholarship can be awarded to an entering freshman from elsewhere in South Dakota. However, first preference will go to a student from South Shore High School interesting in studying math, engineering or science.
