Saint Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701-3995 Phone: (605) 394-6082/2554 Fax: (605) 394-6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 1, 2004 Contact: Steve Buchholz, Public Information Manager, 394-6082 High School Students Engineer Their Futures At YEA Robert Cannon and Brandon Bausch from the Sioux City area were among 31 high school students who participated in the fourth annual Youth Engineering Adventure at South Dakota Tech in Rapid City, S.D. Robert will be a senior at Sergeant Bluff Lutton High School next year while Brandon will be a senior at South Sioux City High School. The purpose of the program is to showcase career opportunities for students with an interest in math and science. The students were involved in many hands-on engineering projects during the weeklong series of learning activities. Projects included: personalizing circuit board displays, soldering electronic circuits, testing memory metals, and learning about manufacturing processes. Students also toured local engineering firms and explored engineering careers during the program. Participants lived in the South Dakota Tech residence halls while attending the program and the week concluded with student presentations highlighting their activities. Many parents and friends attended the closing session. "We want to introduce high school students to some of the important and interesting projects that engineers work on by letting them explore hands-on activities, " Dr. Larry Simonson, program coordinator, said. He is a professor in Tech's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. "Engineers help make the world run. We want to show these students how engineers do that." According to Robert and Brandon, "Not only is attending YEA a great way to get a first-hand look at engineering, but also as an opportunity to meet new and interesting people. The week was packed with good information." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Photo caption: Robert Cannon (left) from Sergeant Bluff and Brandon Bausch from South Sioux City are pictured during the YEA 2004 program at South Dakota Tech. #30#
