St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( January 12, 1998) SDSM& T STUDENT FROM KIMBALL RECOGNIZED FOR PARTICIPATION IN SDSM& T'S " PRAXIS" COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT Participating in the first Praxis community service project offered on a South Dakota campus, Ryan Stadler of Kimball was recently recognized for his volunteer work for Habitat for Humanity this past semester. Stadler, a sophomore Mechanical Engineering student at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, was one of seventeen SDSM& T students who volunteered a total of 266 community service hours to local agencies and civic organizations this past semester. Coordinated by Reverend Donna Hughes- Hargraves of United Campus Ministry, the Praxis project involves students in community service learning opportunities that are integrated into their academic curriculum. Faculty members offer students the option of participating in community service as part of the academic requirements for the course. SDSM& T is the first university in South Dakota to offer the Praxis program, which has been adopted at more than 50 colleges and universities. Praxis is Aristotle's word for learning by doing or action/ reflection model of education. In addition to Habitat for Humanity, other community agencies where Tech students did volunteer work include the Boys' Club; Girls Incorporated; Head Start; Hospice of the Hills; Journey Museum; Little Miners' Clubhouse; Literacy Council of the Black Hills; SHARE South Dakota; Western South Dakota Juvenile Services; and Women Against Violence, Inc. Several students plan to continue volunteering their time and talents to local community agencies. Dr. Douglas Lange, SDSM& T Dean of Students, compares Praxis to a saltation, or leap, by the university into the community. " This program blends academic and student affairs in a concrete way with the ideals of service, " said Dr. Lange. ++ 30++ ( f:\ programs\ dept\ univrel\ pressrele\ 198\ Praxis Recognition Local Kimball )
