St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( September 19, 1997) SDSM& T HOSTING 25TH MIDWESTERN MECHANICS CONFERENCE SEPT. 21- 24 The 25th Midwestern Mechanics Conference ( MWMC) is being sponsored by SDSM& T September 21- 24 at the Alex Johnson Hotel. The MWMC has been held every two years since 1949 and has been sponsored by some of the most prestigious universities in the nation. The conference provides a forum for exchange of ideas among the diverse disciplines of mechanics. Original invited and contributed papers will be presented in all areas of mechanics: basic or applied, theoretical or experimental, including papers that cross over and combine various disciplines in mechanics and materials science. Ten foreign countries are represented. Conference keynote speakers include Dr. Donald F. Adams, University of Wyoming; Dr. James Doyle, Purdue University; and Dr. John Nairn, University of Utah. The speaker for Tuesday evening's banquet will be Mr. Andrew Johnson ( SDSMT Alumnus MetE 64), General Electric Corporation. Two symposia will be on- going during the conference. A symposium entitled " The Mechanics- Materials Linkage in the Engineering Curriculum: What Is It? Who Wants It? How Do We Get It?" is sponsored by the Institute for Mechanics and Materials. Each afternoon a plenary session will be held around one of the symposium subtopics: " What is it?", " Who wants it?", and " How do we get it?". The symposium subtopics will give an introductory and historical prospective, will provide for motivation from research and industrial perspectives, and will focus on necessary reforms in the engineering curriculum. Speakers include Dr. George Dieter, University of Maryland; Dr. David Roylance, Massachusetts Institute of Technology ( MIT); and Dr. Surendra Shah, Northwestern University. A White Paper will be drafted summarizing the current status of the mechanics- materials linkage in the engineering curriculum and future directions that must be taken. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the " Rushmore Symposium" on micromechanics in composites will also be held during the MWMC event. This symposium will bring together a broad, multidisciplinary audience and features leading researchers such as Dr. John Nairn, Univ. of Utah; Dr. Michael Piggott, Univ. of Toronto; and Dr. Linda Schadler, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Additional papers will be presented in the areas of interfacial mechanics, advanced experimental techniques, finite element analysis, and structure/ property relationships associated with composites. Conference co- chairs are Dr. Chris Jenkins and Dr. Lidvin Kjerengtroen, SDSM& T Assoc. Professors of Mechanical Engineering. Additional information can be obtained via the MWMC web site at http:// www. sdsmt. edu/ mwm97 or by contacting the conference secretary, Deb Tompkins, at 394- 2401 ( email: dtompkin@ msmailgw. sdsmt. edu). -- 30-- ( f:\ programs\ dept\ univrel\ pressrele\ 0997\ MWMC fax/ stwd
