The Inauguration ceremony is scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday, April 26, in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Theatre. South Dakota Tech invites the community to attend. Reserve a spot by calling Rick Rhode at (605) 394-6995 or RSVP on line at www.sdsmt.edu/CeremonyRSVP. "In the university's 119-year history, we've had just 17 presidents, making inauguration ceremonies an important transition to new leadership, " Dr. Karen Whitehead, vice president for academic affairs, said. "This inauguration is about the university, its history, its role in our community and state, and its future." The ceremony will include a full academic procession consisting of faculty, administrators, students, South Dakota Board of Regents members, and presidents and representatives of other colleges and universities from across the nation. South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds will present the Inaugural Address, and Dr. Ruch will receive the institution's symbols of leadership. Ruch will then present his address that outlines his vision for South Dakota Tech. The university also will dedicate the university mace, a ceremonial item crafted from a fossil, precious metals and other symbols of the university's history and heritage. A reception honoring Ruch and his wife, Sally, will follow the inauguration in the lobby of the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Theatre. Ruch became South Dakota Tech's 17th president on July 1, 2003. He holds master's and doctorate degrees in education from Northwestern University and a -more- -page 2- bachelor's degree in chemistry from The College of Wooster (Ohio). Before joining South Dakota Tech, Dr. Ruch served as President of Boise State University for 10 years. Previously, Dr. Ruch spent 19 years at Virginia Commonwealth University, first as an associate dean and dean, and as provost and vice president. His first university assignment came at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a faculty member and department chair. In every community he has joined, Dr. Ruch has been active in organizations and efforts to make those communities better places to live. He has continued that effort in Rapid City, especially when it comes to economic development. In that critical area, he has made a priority of using campus expertise to build an even brighter regional economic future. Since joining Tech, Dr. Ruch also has opened lines of communication with the community through a bi-weekly e-letter, begun a strategic planning process, and created numerous partnerships to improve Tech, the community, the state, and the region.
