St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( October 8, 1997) SDSM& T TO KICK OFF CENTER OF EXCELLENCE IN ADVANCED MANUFACTURING & PRODUCTION ( CAMP) ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 9 South Dakota School of Mines and Technology ( SDSM& T) officials will formally kick off the establishment of the Center of Excellence in Advanced Manufacturing and Production ( CAMP) at 11: 30 a. m., Thursday, October 9, , in the Surbeck Center Ballroom. Dr. Richard Gowen, SDSM& T President, will report on the creation of CAMP to the South Dakota Board of Regents who will be meeting on the Tech campus October 9- 10. Dr. Michael Batchelder, Interim Dean of SDSM& T's College of Systems Engineering, and Dr. Dan Dolan, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, also will explain the operation of CAMP. In addition to helping provide the best design and manufacturing education to Tech students, CAMP is an exciting new program that will help companies solve design and manufacturing problems through the use of enterprise teams. CAMP will integrate students, faculty and industry partners into a Center whose purpose will be to develop a unique approach to manufacturing education that simultaneously addresses explicit needs of industry. CAMP also will create an electronic community using advanced telecommunications technology to facilitate interaction between higher education and industry. In addition, the Center will provide a focus for manufacturing technology assistance to private industry. South Dakota will benefit from CAMP specifically from: 1) expanded industry collaborations to assist South Dakota manufacturers with being competitive in today's global marketplace; 2) an Executive Graduate Program that includes industry professionals through distance conferencing technology; and 3) cooperative university/ industry projects that foster economic development through the enhancement of manufacturing and production capability. " CAMP offers many exciting opportunities for both South Dakota Tech and the State of South Dakota, " said SDSM& T President Richard Gowen. " This Center will utilize and build on Tech's traditions of excellence to strengthen our educational programs, our industrial technical assistance, our research programs, and our many economic development activities." Higher education in South Dakota has a long history of working together with manufacturing industries in South Dakota to provide technical assistance. SDSM& T -- more-- -- 2-- receives several requests for assistance with manufacturing and production problems each month. The Center will enhance responsiveness to these demonstrated industry needs, will tap the resources of Tech's most talented students, and will enable rapid communication and information flow through the electronic community. Four of Tech's laboratories – Electrical and Computer Engineering, Advanced Composites, Advanced Manufacturing, and Injection Molding -- will be active components of the Center. Special equipment in these four labs include the Compression Test Frame, MTS Dynamic Test Frame ( 100, 000 lb. capacity), MTS Dynamic Test Frame ( 50, 000 lb. capacity), Filament Winder, Computer Numerical Control Lathe, Coordinate Measurement Machine, Vertical Machining Center, Printed Circuit Prototyping Machine, Sun Workstations/ Mentor Graphics Software, and Injection Molding Machine. The establishment of CAMP is a direct outgrowth of Tech's implementation of Reinvestments Through Efficiencies in the higher education budget process. During the kick- off program on Thursday, CAMP students will be present to show their projects and to lead tours to various manufacturing laboratories on campus.
