TranscriptSouth Dakota Tech News 501 E. Saint Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701-3995 Phone: (605) 394-6082/2554 Fax: (605) 394-6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 3, 2004 Contact: Steve Buchholz, Public Information Manager, 394-6082 Tech To Dedicate Hall of Fame South Dakota Tech and the Hardrock Club will dedicate the Christensen Hall of Fame at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 6. The Hall of Fame is located in the new addition to the King Center on campus. Tech invites the media to attend. Construction of the Christensen Hall of Fame addition to the King Center was completed in mid-April, and is an integral part of the Hardrock Club Golden Anniversary Campaign. The Hall of Fame will honor past athletes, coaches, teams, athletic traditions and contributors by permanently dedicating a place to remember the past and to look to the future with pride for what Tech stands for on the playing field and in the classroom. The $1 million dollar Golden Anniversary Campaign will also add $600, 000 in scholarships and $100, 000 to support recruiting and supplement athletic department needs. The Christensen Hall of Fame also will honor Jim and Nancy Christensen, longtime supporters of South Dakota Tech. The Christensens' ties to South Dakota Tech, its athletic programs and the Hardrock Club are deep. While Jim was a Tech student in the 1950s, he was a member of the Hardrocker football and track teams. He graduated from Tech with a degree in general engineering in 1957. Throughout his life, Jim was involved as a supporter of nearly every facet of Tech. He was active member of the Foundation Board of Trustees and was serving as chairman of the Foundation's investment committee at the time of his death. He also served as a co-chair for the Foundation's VISION 2000 capital campaign. Jim was a founding member of the "Old Jocks Club, " a group pledged to endow athletic scholarships at Tech, and he also created and funded the "Christensen Endowment" to benefit the entrepreneurial efforts of Tech students. He also served as the Alumni Association Executive Vice President from 1984 to 1991, and Jim and Nancy were involved as volunteers on the five-year all-school reunion committee. To honor his remarkable career and his involvement with the university, Jim received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1999. As visitors enter the Christensen Hall of Fame, they will see maple and glass showcases displaying memorabilia from past athletes and athletic teams as well as sturdy brick columns displaying the names of Hardrock Club donors. They also will see a portrait of Jim and Nancy Christensen with the following words beneath it: "The Christensen Hall of Fame honors James and Nancy Christensen's friendship, generosity, and commitment to SDSM&T. Jim and Nancy believe the outstanding educational opportunities available at Tech are enhanced by athletic endeavors. The Christensen Hall of Fame honors excellence on the field and in the classroom by recognizing those who prepare for lifetime challenges by combining a technical education with a commitment to hard work, team play, and a desire to win." #30#
