TitleDestination ImagiNation Team Schedules Fund-Raiser
TranscriptSouth Dakota Tech News 501 E. Saint Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701-3995 Phone: (605) 394-6082/2554 Fax: (605) 394-6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 21, 2004 Contact: Steve Buchholz, Public Information Manager, 394-6082 Destination ImagiNation Team Schedules Fund-Raiser The Rapid City team heading to next week's Destination ImagiNation World Finals will hold one last fund-raiser before the May 26 to May 29 competition in Knoxville, Tenn. The South Dakota Tech/Children's Science Center team will assist customers, bag groceries and perform musical arrangements from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 22, at Staple & Spice Market, 601 Mount Rushmore Road, Rapid City. The team qualified for the World Finals by winning the state competition held in Pierre. Since then, the team members have been working to raise nearly $10, 000 for airfare, accommodations and meals for the trip. The team includes a homeschooled student and students from Wilson and Pinedale elementary schools. Destination ImagiNation is an international organization for kindergarten through college students and community groups. Its purpose it to teach life skills and expand imaginations through team-based creative problem solving. Destination ImagiNation affiliates offer tournaments at different levels to let participants demonstrate their creative problem solving skills. Teams advance through tournaments with their eyes on the World Finals, where teams from around the globe will compete. Teams choose one of five team challenges for competition. The Children's Science Center Elementary team will compete in the Improve challenge, and will need to create a six-minute show within 30 minutes of receiving instructions. Most teams practice their solutions for weeks and months before tournaments. Solutions often take the form of skits that feature props, costumes and special effects. The students must, on their own, design the solutions, write the dialogue, sew the costumes and build the sets. The team manager and other adults can not help. And that's the point of Destination ImagiNation teaching students real-world skills while making the learning as fun as possible. #30#
