The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology has been working with the city of Rapid City and the Rapid City Area School District on a transition plan for exhibits and programming associated with the center. Those plans remain in the early stages. The Center's last day before the transition stage begins is May 22. Until then, the Center will be open from 3 p.m. to 5: 30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday; and from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. All Center members will receive gift shop credit for the prorated value of their memberships until May 22. "We are interested in serving the best interests of the Rapid City community, " Julie Smoragiewicz, Tech's vice president for University Relations, said. "We truly appreciate all the support we've received from businesses and individuals in this community. We know people value this center, and want them to know that their contributions have had a tremendous impact on the lives of thousands and thousands of children in the Rapid City community. We assure everyone that we will do everything possible to ensure them that the exhibits and educational resources will continue to be available in some format." The Children's Science Center was established to provide the children of the Rapid City area with interactive activities in science and technology. The center has provided children, families and tourists with quality learning opportunities in science, math and technology. Although the university was able to serve a large number of local families and tourists during the summer months, it was unable to meet the needs of area teachers and school groups during the academic year. The city of Rapid City approached the university with the offer of proving the use of the Halley Park museum facility for the Center.
