Mr. Jerry Probst of Barrick Goldstrike, presented the $ 25, 000 check to SDSM& T President Dr. Richard J. Gowen during Tech's Career Fair in which Barrick Goldstrike participated. Barrick Goldstrike's donation is to be used for scholarships, improvement of SDSM& T's computerized mine design laboratory, and program development of the university's Department of Mining Engineering. " We are grateful for the generous support that Barrick Goldstrike is providing to South Dakota Tech, " said SDSM& T President Gowen. " This donation is further illustration of Tech's national reputation as a top- notch science and engineering institution that provides the type of quality graduates sought by our industry partners such as Barrick Goldstrike." " Barrick Goldstrike is pleased to present SDSM& T with this gift to help ensure that South Dakota Tech continues its tradition of excellence in education and to help foster talented students who have the skills and knowledge necessary to meet the mining industry's challenges of the 21st century, " said Jerry Probst, Director of Human Resources, Barrick Goldstrike. Barrick Goldstrike is a subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corporation, the third largest gold mining company in the world. Since 1987, Goldstrike has produced about nine million ounces of gold and still has vast reserve potential. Several SDSM& T alumni are currently employed by Barrick Goldstrike, including Charles R. Geary, Jr. ( Mine 70), who is Vice President and Assistant General Manager of Operations. Other Tech alumni working for Barrick Goldstrike include William Haufschild ( EE ' 70), John Henris ( GeolE ' 85), Brian Henry ( ChemE ' 96), Terry Hertel ( Chem ' 75), Wade Jensen ( ChemE ' 95), Jody Lowery ( ChemE ' 95), Mark Mudlin ( Mine ' 84); Mark Rantapaa ( GeolE ' 87) and Karla Ruhoff ( MetE ' 92).
