| Transcript | South Dakota Tech News 501 E. Saint Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701-3995 Phone: (605) 394-6082/2554 • Fax: (605) 394-6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 20, 2004 Contact: Steve Buchholz, Public Information Manager, 394-6082 Local Students Selected As FIRST Participants The following students from the Sioux Falls area are among the 101 students selected to participate in a new South Dakota Tech program designed to help freshmen succeed. South Dakota Tech is an engineering and science university in Rapid City, S.D. • Sioux Falls: Travis Schmidt, John Nielson, Alan Haas, Michael deStigter • Tea: Brent Mette, Alan Muhlenkort, Craig Atkins • Brandon: Tyler Ode The program, called FIRST, Freshman Introduction to Real Success at Tech, will help students develop connections with each other and the university during each student's first year on campus. "These connections provide the students with a foundation of support both academically and socially during their first year at Tech, " Reeny Wilson, Tech's director of Residence Life, said. "Also, participants will be able to take advantage of in-hall tutoring and coordinated study groups. Various other features of the program will give participants opportunities to live, learn and succeed." FIRST evolved during a year of planning after Tech staff and faculty saw a need for students to have a more integrated first year. "First-year students spend a majority of their time in the residence halls, so making a stronger connection between academics and life in the dorms just makes sense, " Wilson said. "We also want to help students develop strong, healthy relationships in their peer groups and with the university. These types of relationships have a positive impact on a student's success." #30# |
