KAREN WHITEHEAD APPOINTED VICE PRESIDENT OF SDSM& T Dr. Karen Whitehead has been appointed Vice President for Academic Affairs at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology ( SDSM& T). Her appointment is effective July 1 upon the retirement of current Vice President Dr. James Goodman. Dr. Whitehead has served as Dean of the SDSM& T College of Systems Engineering since 1994 and was head of the SDSM& T Department of Mathematics and Computer Science from 1986- 1994. She was named Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science in 1992, after serving previously as Associate Professor (' 85-' 91) and Assistant Professor (' 81-' 84) in that department. From 1984 to 1986, Dr. Whitehead was Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Computing. Prior to joining the SDSM& T faculty in 1981, she was a teaching assistant in the University of Minnesota School of Mathematics. Other positions she has held include Instructor, East Anglian Schools of English, Norwich, England; Programmer/ Analyst, Hennepin County Data Processing, Minneapolis, MN; Teacher, Ministry of Education, Government of Uganda; and Programmer, University of Minnesota, School of Medicine. She earned her B. A. ( German, 1966) and her Ph. D. ( Mathematics, 1982) degrees from the University of Minnesota. She studied mathematics and computer science as an undergraduate at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, England, and also liberal arts at the University of Colorado. Dr. Whitehead's accomplishments as Dean of the SDSM& T College of Systems Engineering include: * Establishment of a comprehensive planning document which details and prioritizes technology needs three years into the future for the College of Systems Engineering. * Successful accreditation visits by NCA and CSAB, receiving the maximum allowable reaccreditation from both, as well as an interim visit by ABET * Promoting interdisciplinary communication and cooperation within the College community * Graduate program planning - Electrical and Mechanical Engineering to examine the structure of their graduate programs to develop three year plans for course offerings and to investigate the feasibility of sharing courses across programs * Obtaining $. 5 million for equipment through miscellaneous grants. Dr. Whitehead is actively involved in numerous local, state, and national organizations, including Chair of the Rocky Mountain Section of the Mathematical Association of America; Facilitator, PEW Roundtables on Higher Education, University of South Dakota and Black Hills State University; NSF- Statewide Systemic Initiative Proposal Planning Group; South Dakota Mathematics Coalition Board; SD Board of Regents Computer Science Curriculum Committee; Economic Education Committee, Rapid City Area Chamber of Commerce; Data Processing Audit Committee, Pennington County Board of Commissioners; Project SMART Advisory Board, Girls, Inc.; Leadership Rapid City; and Black Hills Chamber Music Society Board. In addition, she has been a consultant to the Mount Rushmore National Memorial Society; Dakota Scientific Software; ETA Systems, Inc.; and the SDSM& T Foundation. " Karen Whitehead's leadership and vision will help lead South Dakota Tech into the 21st century. She is a valued member of this university and has done an excellent job in her capacity as dean.
