Saint Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701-3995 Phone: (605) 394-6082/2554 • Fax: (605) 394-6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 25, 2004 Contact: Steve Buchholz, Public Information Manager, 394-6082 Conference Lays Wall To Wall Concrete Concrete researchers, contractors, cement plants workers, consulting firms, builders, government agencies and others will converge on South Dakota Tech next week for the 40th annual Concrete Conference. "This conference is for anybody interested in quality concrete and the specialized area of self-consolidating concrete, " Tech Civil Engineering professor Dr. M. R. Hansen said. "It's solid concrete for the whole day." The conference begins at 8 a.m. Friday, March 5, in Room 252 of the Electrical Engineering/Physics Building. A series of seminars will precede the 1 p.m. awards presentation, scheduled for the Surbeck Student Center Ballroom. Seminars continue until 4:45 p.m., when the conference speakers will participate in a panel discussion. The speaker's list includes heavy hitters in the world of concrete. • Anne Ellis develops business initiatives for the Global Water and Environmental Services division of Earth Tech, an international environmental engineering, consulting and construction firm. • John Schemmel is professor and head of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at South Dakota State University. • Terry Collins graduated from South Dakota Tech in 1998. He currently is an engineer with Portland Cement Association. • Jerry L. Brown is a recently retired civil engineer from Pete Lien and Sons Inc. and its Birdsall Sand and Gravel Division. He spent nearly 34 years in the ready mixed concrete, sand and gravel, crushed stone and lime industries. -more- -page 2- • Charles Nmai is chief engineer at Master Builders, where he provides technical guidance and support in the areas of admixtures and high-performance concrete, concrete durability, claims investigation and troubleshooting of concrete problems. • Dave Suchorski is technical services manager with Ash Grove Cement. He has more than 25 years experience in the cement and concrete industry. Conference organizers will give a Lifetime Achievement Award to William F. Rossi. For the past 10 years, he has served as western division technical service manager for GCC Dacotah. Prior to joining GCC, he spent 25 years in various technical and managerial positions in the cement, ready-mixed concrete and precast concrete industries. He is a member of the Rocky Mountain Division of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and serves on several of its national subcommittees. He has been a lecturer in the ACI Certification of Concrete Field Testing programs in six states and has been instrumental in the development and presentation of various concrete seminars. He currently serves as Education Chairman for the Colorado Ready Mixed Concrete Association. #30# |
