St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( June 16, 1997) SDSM& T ASCE CHAPTER NAMED TOP STUDENT CHAPTER IN NATION The SDSM& T Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers ( ASCE) has been selected as the 1997 winner of the prestigious Robert Ridgway Student Chapter Award. This award is presented annually to the top Student ASCE Chapter in the nation. The SDSM& T Chapter will receive the Ridgway Award at the ASCE Annual Convention which will be held in Minneapolis this October. Tech's chapter received the award because of its outstanding work in promoting public awareness of the civil engineering profession and its active involvement in community service projects. In addition to the chapter's concrete canoe activities and the recent hosting of the Rocky Mountain Regional Conference, other projects this past year include the following: Adopt- A- Highway, Little Miners' Clubhouse Playground, Concrete Conference, Humane Society Building Repair, Visiting Scientist, and Boy Scouts Tiger Safari— to name just a few. Officers for Tech's ASCE Chapter for the 1996 calendar year were: Brenda Flottmeyer, president; Steve Palmer, vice president; Guy Erlenbusch, rec. secy; Steve Horner, corr. secy; David Guhin, treasurer; and Michelle Nielsen, historian. Current officers since January 1, 1997 are: Jeff Thomason, president; Steve Palmer, vice president; Jessica Gould, rec. secy; Jeromy Johnson, corr. secy; Melanie Asquith, treas.; and Holly Guillame, historian. Faculty advisor is Dr. M. R. Hansen. The Robert Ridgway Award was established in 1965 by Isabel Ridgway in honor of her late husband, a past ASCE president. The last and only other time that Tech won this award was 27 years ago. Dr. Thomas Propson, Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering, was faculty advisor of the Tech chapter in 1970. ++ 30++ ( fs1/ programs/ dept/ univrel/ pressrele/ 0697/ Ridgway Award fax/ stwd).
