Tad Perry, Executive Director tadp@ris.sdbor.edu Janelle Toman, Director of Information & Institutional Research janellet@ris.sdbor.edu T: 605.773.3455 F: 605.773.5320 www.sdbor.edu For Immediate Release: Monday, January 5, 2004 SDSMT Professor Chosen as Regents' Fellow PIERRE – A professor of sociology at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology has been named a Regents' Fellow, the South Dakota Board of Regents and SDSMT officials announced Wednesday. Sid Goss will work out of the regents' system office on projects aimed at further improving academic quality at the state's six public universities. "Part of Sid's assignment is to work with the board on a comprehensive review of the system's general education requirements, " said Tad Perry, the regents' executive director. "That review has already begun, with changes to be implemented in the fall of 2005." Perry said the system review would also look at university requirements for information technology literacy and graduation from specific institutions. "General education is the foundation on which all our academic programs are built, " Perry said. "We need to determine whether the system's general education offerings meet academic goals, and if all course objectives are sufficiently challenging for our students. Sid's extensive experience in the classroom will be a real asset in this system-wide effort." Since coming to Tech in 1974, Goss has held increasingly responsible positions, moving through the ranks to become a tenured professor. His previous duties included dean of college relations, director of continuing education and summer school, interim library director, assistant vice president for academic affairs, and social sciences department chair. "Dr. Goss is an invaluable asset to South Dakota Tech, " said SDSMT President Charles Ruch. "He truly cares about the university and about the future of higher education, and while we'll miss his presence on campus, he'll make excellent contributions as a Regents' Fellow." Goss has bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. degrees in sociology, as well as a master of education degree in guidance and counseling, all from South Dakota State University. He is also active in many Black Hills area organizations, serving on the boards of the Mount Rushmore Society, Crazy Horse Memorial, Northern Plains Eye Foundation, and chair of the governmental affairs committee of the Rapid City Area Chamber of Commerce. He is a past chair of the South Dakota Humanities Council and previously served as executive director for the Museum Alliance of Rapid City. "I look forward to the challenges and opportunities the Regents' Fellow program presents, " Goss said. "I am eager to learn more about the operations of the public higher education system in South Dakota." The Regents' Fellow program provides a professional development opportunity for regular tenure-track faculty and administrative professionals in the Board of Regents' system. Fellows undertake assignments at the direction of senior BOR staff. Perry said he expects Goss to be assigned to the regents' office through the end of the year. -30- |
