TranscriptSouth Dakota Tech News 501 E. Saint Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701-3995 Phone: (605) 394-6082/2554 Fax: (605) 394-6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 17, 2003 Contact: Steve Buchholz, Public Information Manager, 394-6082 Speaker Puts Women And Girls In The Pipeline Patricia Galloway, president-elect of the American Society of Civil Engineers, will speak about women in engineering during an event at South Dakota Tech on Saturday, Dec. 6. The seminar, "Women and Girls in the Pipeline, " is scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Surbeck Student Center. Tech has invited high school girls and college students to attend the event to learn about Galloway's experiences in a career where women are a minority. Girls represent more than half the future workforce, but when it comes to engineering, few pursue careers in this critical field. Statistics indicate women represent less than 10 percent of all engineers and less than 20 percent of all college engineering students in the United States. Engineering careers represent a pathway to self-sufficiency for women, and provide young girls a goal to work toward. Galloway, an internationally recognized leader in civil engineering and construction, is chief executive officer, president and a principal of Nielsen-Wurster. The Princeton, N.J.-based engineering and management consulting services firm works in the legal, regulatory, engineering, industrial, commercial and construction fields. Tech plans to hold additional events to encourage young women to consider engineering and science and a career. #30#
