Saint Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701-3995 Phone: (605) 394-6082/2554 • Fax: (605) 394-6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 3, 2003 Contact: Steve Buchholz, Public Information Manager, 394-6082 Tech Students Headed To Chem Car Competition The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology will send a team to the national Chem-E-Car competition scheduled for Nov. 16 in San Francisco, Calif. The competition is part of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers Annual Student Conference. The team built and operated a chemically powered model car for the competition. Tech's car is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, and its body was fabricated with Tech's rapid-prototyping machine. In the competition, the car must carry a payload for a certain distance. Tech's team qualified for nationals by winning the 2003 regional Chemical Car competition held in the spring in Tucson, Ariz. The team won first place in both car performance and in the poster competition.
