Saint Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701-3995 Phone: (605) 394-6082/2554 • Fax: (605) 394-6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 6, 2003 Contact: Steve Buchholz, Public Information Manager, 394-6082 Rockwell Collins Grant Creates Research Rockwell Collins will present a $24, 584 grant to the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology during an event scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, in room 230 of Tech's Electrical Engineering/Physics Building. Tech will use the money to support RF and Microwave Engineering education. Dr. Keith Whites, professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Tech students are conducting state-of-art research in RF Communications that has great potential to be commercialized and impact economic development in South Dakota. The Rockwell Collins grant will allow Whites to purchase equipment that will further that research. RF (radio frequency) and microwave engineering are specializations within electrical engineering that develop devices that use electrical signals of very high frequency. Cell phones, global positioning receivers and wireless computer networks are all examples of products based on RF or microwave electronics. Rockwell Collins chose Tech and five other universities to receive funding from 29 proposals. The purpose of the Rockwell Collins University Grant Program is to develop long-term relationships with key schools to increase the pool of outstanding students interested in potential careers at Rockwell Collins. Currently, 92 Tech graduates work for Rockwell Collins. One of those graduates, Alan Bergeron, will present the check to Whites during the Aug. 11 event. Bergeron graduated from Tech in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. Whites and his students conduct their research in the Miller Laboratory, created -more- -page 2- with a $1.2 million donation from Tech alum Steven P. Miller. The laboratory is equipped with instrumentation funded by proposals submitted to several organizations, including the National Science Foundation, Agilent Technologies and Rockwell Collins. The value of the instrumentation is approaching $1 million. Tech invites the media to attend Monday's event. #30# |
