St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( December 30, 1997) SDSM& T PRAXIS STUDENTS VOLUNTEER 266 HOURS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE Participating in the first Praxis program offered on a South Dakota campus, seventeen SDSM& T students volunteered a total of 266 community service hours to local agencies and civic organizations this past semester. Coordinated by Reverend Donna Hughes- Hargraves of United Campus Ministry, the Praxis project involves students in community service learning opportunities that are integrated into their academic curriculum. Faculty members offer students the option of participating in community service as part of the academic requirements for the course. SDSM& T is the first university in South Dakota to offer the Praxis program, which has been adopted at more than 50 colleges and universities. Praxis is Aristotle's word for learning by doing or action/ reflection model of education. SDSM& T faculty members who participated in this fall's pilot project were Dr. Kathy Antonen, Associate Professor of English; Dr. Michael Day, Associate Professor of English; and Dr. James McReynolds, Associate Professor of Psychology. Students completing the pilot Praxis program are: Joie Archer, Interdisciplinary Sciences ( IS) senior, Rapid City; Brad Burdette, IS sophomore, Rapid City; Nickolas Cheever, Mechanical Engineering ( ME) senior, Elk Point; Justin Christman, Civil Engineering ( CE) sophomore, Lemmon; Susan Conner, IS junior, Caputa; Beverley Espeland, IS junior, Rapid City; Alysia Kelly, Engineering freshman, Rapid City; Curtis Knox, Computer Engineering senior, Rapid City; Melissa Malchow, Industrial Engineering ( IE) senior, Rapid City; Marcie Marshall, Metallurgical Engineering senior, Box Elder; Celeste Mercado, Chemistry freshman, Box Elder; Zakeyo Ngoma, Mining Engineering junior, Zambia; Dawn Recker, Chemistry senior, Gillette, WY; Heidi Sieverding, Geological Engineering senior, Rapid City; Ryan Stadler, ME sophomore, Kimball; Michael Tisdale, CE senior, Rapid City; and Christine Toering, IE senior, Rapid City. The Tech students volunteered at the Boys' Club; Girls Incorporated; Head Start; Habitat for Humanity; Hospice of the Hills; Journey Museum; Little Miners' Clubhouse; Literacy Council of the Black Hills; SHARE South Dakota; Western South Dakota Juvenile Services; and Women Against Violence, Inc. Several students plan to continue volunteering their time and talents to local community agencies. Dr. Douglas Lange, SDSM& T Dean of Students, compares Praxis to a saltation, or leap, by the university into the community.
