St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 3388 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( April 16, 1997) LARRY OWEN ENDOWMENT ESTABLISHED AT SDSM& T SDSM& T Foundation and Black Hills Corporation officials will announce the establishment of the Larry Owen Endowment Fund at a reception this afternoon, Wednesday, April 16, on Tech's campus. During the reception, Black Hills Corporation officials will present the SDSM& T Foundation with a check for $ 20, 000 as a lead gift for the endowment fund. The check will be presented at 1: 30 p. m. in the Bump Lounge of Tech's Surbeck Center. The endowment is being established to recognize Larry Owen's career achievements at Black Hills Corporation and his numerous acts of philanthropic support. Owen retired as CEO and President of Black Hills Corporation in 1990. Initially the Larry Owen Endowment Fund will provide a fellowship for a student pursuing a Master of Science degree in Technology Management at SDSM& T. Owen served as an adjunct professor teaching classes in this area. His vast business experience provided invaluable real life educational opportunities that he shared with students. The ultimate goal of the Fund is to provide a Professorship which will nurture the quality of the faculty by supporting eminent scholars who will promote the teaching of Technology Management skills at the Tech. " Larry Owen personifies all of the qualities and abilities desirable in a true leader, " said SDSM& T Foundation President Rod Pappel. " Black Hills Corporation, the Foundation and all other groups he interacted with benefited from his leadership. It is wonderful that Black Hills Corporation has chosen to honor Larry at our institution by establishing the Larry Owen Endowment Fund." Owen served as a past member of the SDSM& T Foundation Executive Committee and Board of Directors. He has also served as an SDSM& T adjunct faculty member and was awarded an honorary degree from SDSM& T in 1984. Owen has served as a volunteer for many organizations including the Children's Home Society, Rapid City Regional Hospital, United Way, the Spearfish Canyon Foundation, the Rapid City Community Foundation and the South Dakota Community Foundation.
