Saint Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701-3995 Phone: (605) 394-6082/2554 Fax: (605) 394-6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 4, 2003 Contact: Steve Buchholz, Public Information Manager, 394-6082 Tech Announces State Geographic Bee Results Otis Clarke, a seventh-grade student at Axtell Park Middle School in Sioux Falls, kept his bearings Friday to win the South Dakota Geographic Bee at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Otis will travel to Washington, D.C. in May to compete in the National Geographic Bee against other state and territory winners. Otis won by surviving several hours of questions that tested his knowledge of national and world geography. If Otis can't make the trip to Washington, second-place winner Anne Pfeifle, a sixth-grade student at West Middle School in Rapid City, will take Otis' place at the National Bee. Student winners of geography contests across South Dakota converged on Tech campus for Fridays competition. Tech offered the students special programs that added to the experience for all participants. The winner of the National Geographic Bee takes home a $25, 000 college scholarship and lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society. The second- and third-place winners received $15, 000 and $10, 000 scholarships, respectively. #30#
