Saint Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701-3995 Phone: (605) 394-6082/2554 Fax: (605) 394-6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 21, 2003 Contact: Steve Buchholz, Public Information Manager, 394-6082 Team Pours Entry For Big Beam Contest A team of students at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology will pour concrete this week to create an entry in the Big Beam Contest sponsored by the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute. Pouring preparation begins at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, in the concrete lab in the Civil/Mechanical Building on campus. The actual pouring begins when the preparation is complete, probably around 2 p.m. The student team had to design the beam to be as strong as possible. The beam cannot be longer than 15 feet, and cannot be wider than 9 inches or taller than 12 inches. When the beam is ready, the team will use specialized equipment to test the beam's strength. The team then reports the test result to the Institute. Last year, a Tech team won $2, 500 for a scholarship fund. Tech invites the media to attend the beam pouring to see the results of this engineering challenge. #30#
