Saint Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701-3995 Phone: (605) 394-6082/2554 • Fax: (605) 394-6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 21, 2003 Contact: Steve Buchholz, Public Information Manager, 394-6082 Stevens High School Sweeps Top Science Fair Awards Stevens High School students took home the top four awards from the 48th High Plains Regional Science and Engineering Fair held Friday, March 21, at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Blake Campbell walked away with the top prize, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair trophy. His project was called "The Effect of Cell Phone Emissions on Drosophila Melanogaster: A Wake-Up Call?" Campbell will travel to Cleveland, Ohio, in May for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, where he will face the world's best science fair projects. Traveling with him will be Stevens High School student Joshua Vukelich, who won the second place award Friday with the project, "A Terrestrial Determination." Judges also named two alternates for the International Science Fair. They will travel if Campbell or Vukelich cannot make the trip. The Stevens High School student team of Bobbi Ingaldson and Mehdi Merai was named first alternate with the project, "Differences in Short and Long Term Memory." Stevens High School student Vanessa Bush was named second alternate with the project, "Harvesting the Wind." More than 400 sixth- through 12th-graders brought their projects to Tech for the event. The fair featured 350 entries from students from across South Dakota. Students in sixth through eighth grades competed in one of the following categories: biological, physical and team. Students in ninth through 12th grades competed in one of these divisions: medicine and health, biology, chemistry/physics/mathematics, engineering/earth and space sciences and behavioral and social sciences. #30# |
