Saint Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701-3995 Phone: (605) 394-6082/2554 • Fax: (605) 394-6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 4, 2003 Contact: Steve Buchholz, Public Information Manager, 394-6082 Conference Lays Wall To Wall Concrete Concrete researchers, contractors, cement plants workers, consulting firms, builders, government agencies and others will converge on the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology this week for the 39th annual Concrete Conference. "This conference is for anybody who deals with concrete in any way shape or form, " Tech Civil Engineering professor Dr. M. R. Hansen said. "It's solid concrete for the whole two days." The two-day conference begins at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 6, with a four-hour technical seminar called, "Analyzing Concrete Test Data." The conference continues at 8 a.m. Friday, March 7, with a series of seminars and talks. All seminars and talks take place in the Electrical Engineering/Physics Building Room 252. An awards ceremony scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday takes place in the Surbeck Student Center Ballroom. The speaker's list includes heavy hitters in the world of concrete. • Dan Baker is past president of the American Concrete Institute, and president of Baker Concrete, the world's largest concrete construction company. • Dr. Luke M. Snell is a professor of Construction and Director of the Concrete Construction Resource Unit at Southern Illinois University. He has completed extensive consulting work on construction and concrete problems throughout the United States and Saudi Arabia. He also has written more than 170 articles about measuring and improving concrete techniques. -more- -page 2- • Kim Basham, also of Baker Concrete, has long and varied experience as a construction engineer. • A.M.R. Trygestad is a structural engineer representing the Portland Cement Association. "The conference is about the very practical use of concrete, " Hansen said. "Our theme is concrete constructability, and we'll be talking about the challenges of using concrete to build difficult structures." Discussions during the conference benefit all taxpayers, Hansen said. "We spend millions in taxpayer dollars on concrete infrastructure of all types, " he said. "Pavement, buildings, bridges are great examples. This conference is dedicated to better quality concrete, and better concrete infrastructure that will last longer and save us all money in the long run." #30# |
