April is national Mathematics Awareness Month, a time to highlight the place math holds in our lives. "Math plays an important role in our society. Having a Mathematics Awareness Month is a great way to recognize the impact and prevalence of math, " South Dakota School of Mines and Technology's Dr. Kyle Riley said. Riley is an assistant professor in Tech's Mathematics and Computer Science Department. Tech offers a bachelor's degree in mathematics, and math is a big part of all majors on campus. The theme for this year's celebration is "Mathematics and Art." Activities around the country will focus on the connection between the math and art. The disciplines of math and art enjoy a rich history that goes back thousands of years. The ancient Greeks and Romans used mathematics in sculptures and to design buildings. The Greeks' development of geometry often involved elaborate and beautiful figures as well as elaborate and insightful theorems. In the 15th Century, the artist Leonardo da Vinci was equally passionate about mathematics. "No human investigation can be called real science if it cannot be demonstrated mathematically, " da Vinci said. In the 16th Century, Durer used math to introduce perspective in art. In the 18th and 19th centuries, cathedrals and mosaics relied extensively on math. In the 20th Century, geometric forms were fundamental to the cubists and many abstract expressionists.
