| Transcript | AVCA recognizes Lady ‘Rockers for Academic Excellence LEXINGTON, Ky. (7/21/09) – The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team was recently honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for earning the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2008-2009 season. The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale. The award is handed out to all levels of collegiate affiliations including: NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA, NCCAA, Two-Year College and High School. "I am very excited for the Hardrocker volleyball program and well as the team's previous coach, Beth Honaker. This awards really shows how hard the SDM volleyball team worked throughout the 2008-09 academic school year, " said new SDM volleyball coach Tiffany Mastin. "In addition, I am also very proud of our players and their dedication it takes to maintain excellence in the classroom as well as on the volleyball court. The Hardrockers are the only team in the Dakota Athletic Conference to receive this award from the AVCA and also had the most DAC Scholar Athlete honorees this past season with 11 earning that honor --- which requires a 3.2 GPA or better. "Each year I'm impressed all over again by the academic prowess of volleyball players, " said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "Total AVCA Team Academic Award winners increased this year by another 55 schools (15%) over last year's record, and, even more impressive, 22% of our four-year college teams had grade point averages of 3.2 or better." The NAIA had 35 of its member schools achieve the honor this year, which is 21 percent of its total membership for 2008-2009. Nine (9) schools in the Two-Year College category attained the mark while the NCCAA produced two recipients. |
