| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines fall sports teams had a little difficulty this past week as both the Hardrocker football team and Lady Hardrocker volleyball team suffered defeats, each coming on long weekend road trips to North Dakota. Football Coming off their first win of the season on Sept. 9 against Haskell University (Lawrence, Kan.), the Hardrockers ran smack dab into the Dakota Athletic Conference's preseason champ favorite in the Dickinson State Blue Hawks. The Hawks, who were winless on the season, struck early in the non-conference bout Saturday (Sept. 16), taking a 27-0 halftime lead and then went on to win, 33-7. Despite the outcome, Hardrocker head coach Dan Kratzer was very pleased with his team's effort and only saw one glaring flaw in his team's performance. "The only aspect of the game that I didn't like was our kicking --- more specifically the punting, " Kratzer said. "We have to remedy the problem." Inconsistence in the kicking game left Dickinson State with a short field to work with and a number of opportunities to score, which Dickinson took full advantage of. On the plus side, Kratzer said last week he would like to get more production out of his freshman running back John Henderson. In Saturday's matchup, the Los Angeles, Calif., native rushed the ball 25 times for 87 yards. Kyle Krajewski (OshKosh, Neb.) also had a productive ground attack, running for 55 yards on five carries. Krajewski also scored the Hardrockers�� only touchdown of the game. As a team, South Dakota Mines netted 86 yards on the ground. Four Dickinson sacks and a few tackles for losses took away from the Rockers' positive run total. "You take away those sacks and lost yards and we had over 150 yards rushing, " Kratzer added. Dickinson scored 10 points in the first quarter and 17 in the second to take a 27-0 lead at the half. Kratzer pointed out that the second half was a lot better, as the Blue Hawks had just one score and South Dakota Mines won the two final quarters, 7-6. "We played pretty good in the second half, both offensively and defensively, " Kratzer said. On the defensive side, the defensive line also delivered a strong performance. Senior linebacker Mike Mule (Billings, Mont.) paced the ‘D' with 12 tackles (seven solo, five asssisted) while teammate and fellow senior James MacCormack (Ashland, Or.) had seven tackles (four solo, three assisted). "Our defensive line is starting to make some plays, " Kratzer said. "We are starting to see some positives out of these defeats." The Hardrockers passing game struggled against the Hawks aggressive defense, but freshman quarterback Jason Beilstein (Lodi, Calif.) was 5-9 for 51 yards. Junior Erik Munsell (Mills, Wyo.) was the top receiver, hauling in two passes for 36 yards. South Dakota School of Mines will enter conference play this weekend as the Hardrockers head back to North Dakota to face the winless Minot State Beavers. Volleyball After picking up two non-conference win last week in Yankton and Mitchell, the Lady Hardrocker netters dropped a pair of Dakota Athletic Conference matches in North Dakota this past weekend and are 0-3 in DAC play. SDSMT fell to Valley City State Friday (Sept. 15) 3-2 and then just came up short on Saturday (Sept. 16) against Mayville State, 3-2. The Vikings defeated the Rockers, 26-30, 30-28, 30-28, 30-20 while the Lady Comets outlasted Mines, 25-30, 30-22, 25-30, 30-22, 16-14. "We didn't play consistently, " said Hardrocker head coach Doug Tabbert. "We are still pretty young and people are still learning to play new positions. They need to figure out what it takes to win.��� In the Valley City match, Mines won the first match but then let two tight ones get away followed by a tough loss in the final set to lose the match. Individually, Stephanie Carpio (Yuma, Colo.) put for a good effort, going 31-40 on the attack with six kills and made good on 18-18 serves with one ace. Rapid City native Jennie Malone had eight kills and was 23-30 on the attack and had a solo block and four assisted blocks as well. Aga Koperek, of Belchatow, Poland, had a great defensive game, coming up with 17 digs and was 40-42 on serve receive and Jenny Hiykel, of Omaha, Neb., had 38 assists in the game. As a team, the Hardrockers tallied 76 digs, was 100-102 on the serve receive, was 92-96 on the serve with seven aces and went 108-154 on the attack and collected 25 kills. "We had phases of good this (past) weekend and phases of bad where we had too many mistakes, " Tabbert said. "We were competitive in spurts." In the Mayville match, the Hardrockers again got out to a quick start winning the first game. The visitors dropped the second set but picked up a Game 3 win. SDM fell in the fourth game to knot the match and then lost the final frame in a very competitive bout. "We need to find more balance with our attack and find some consistence individually, " Tabbert added. Carpio had another strong showing against the Comets, going 24-25 on the serve and made good on 13 of 27 attacks with six kills. Koperek also shined going 18-20 on the serve with two aces and was 24-31 on the attack with seven kills and was 41-45 on serve receive. Katherine Hanson (Sioux Falls) also had a good match converting 21-32 attacks with five kills and came up with a 20-20 effort on serve receive. Sturgis native Amanda Cammack was a factor at the net coming up with three solo blocks and two assisted while Malone had two assisted and one solo. Hiykel led in assists with 49. Team stats showed the Hardrockers going 102-111 on the serve, 86-145 on the attack with 29 kills, tallied 71 digs and was 114 of 123 on serve receive. South Dakota Mines are back in conference play this weekend welcoming Dakota State Friday evening, followed by a match with Jamestown College on Saturday. "We need to win conference matches at home, " Tabbert said. The coach added that the Lady Trojans are struggling right now and the Jimmies don't play well on the road. He also felt that both games were winnable for his squad. The Hardrockers are currently 0-3 in the DAC and 7-4 overall.. Golf The South Dakota School of Mines golf team made another trip up to North Dakota Sept. 17-18 to compete in the Jamestown College Invitational. The tournament was a two-day event held at Jamestown Country Club both days. The Hardrocker men had a consistent showing both days, carding a team total of 336 on Day 1 for the second lowest mark and then fired a 334 on Day 2 which was the lowest total of the round. SDSMT took a 670 for the tournament. In the team standings Mines came in second, just 10 strokes behind Minot State who won the Dakota Athletic Conference event with a 660 (324-336). Jamestown College settled for third with a 672 (332-340) and Dickinson State secured fourth with a 676 (337-339). Individually, the Hardrockers were well represented in the standings as Brad Schaack (sophomore from Vermillion, S.D.) took top honors shooting a two-day score of 160. Schaack carded an 82 on Day 1 followed by a 78 on the second day which was the low round for the tournament. Teammate Hank Tanner, a senior for Casper, Wyo., also had a productive tournament, carding a 163 in the 36 holes of play which put him in a tie for second place with two other competitors. Mines' Quentin Patterson (junior from Sioux Falls) finished in a tie for eighth place after finishing with a 169 (86-83) and teammates Brian Davis (sophomore from Lead, S.D.) and Brandon Eisenbraun (freshman from Yankton, S.D.) both ended the tournament with matching 182's for the weekend. Luke Johnson (Webster, S.D.)rounded out the scoring for South Dakota Mines, tying for 23rd with a score of 186. On the women's side, Hardrocker senior Lisa Steever (Custer) was the only member of the SDSMT to compete even though the Lady Rocker now have four players. Steever secured fifth place in the Jamestown College tourney, firing a two-day total of 181. Steever shot a 92 during the first round and improved during her second round, carding an 89. Both the men's and women's team continue DAC play Sept. 23-24 with yet another trip to North Dakota, this time at the Minot State Invitational. The event will be played at Souiris Valley Golf Course on Day 1 and finish at the Minot Country Club. |
