| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- It's gearing up to be a busy week at South Dakota School of Mines. Not only are the fall sports programs still busy with the later portion of their schedules, but now the basketball teams also join the fold with both the men's and women's teams hosting games this weekend at the King Center. The football team is also home on Saturday while the Lady Hardrocker volleyball team takes another road trip in Dakota Athletic Conference action. With the DAC meet in the books for the cross country squads, they will take a week off before traveling to Sioux Falls for the NAIA Region III meet Nov. 4. Men's basketball The SDM men's hoops team kicked off the 2006-07 season with a friendly competition last Saturday evening taking on the South Dakota School of Mines Alumni at Goodell Gymnasium in Rapid City. The game is an annual event that gives past greats a chance to go head-to-head with the current team. This year's alumni featured some tough competition for the 2006-07 Hardrocker version, and after the Alumni took a 40-35 half time edge, the current Hardrockers rallied in the second half to win the game, 81-74. "You always want to win every time you step on the floor, " said Hardrocker head coach Jason Henry. "Whether it's an alumni game or a scrimmage." The game wasn't your typical alumni event, where the level of play is honed back and the intensity is a little more casual. The Hardrocker Alumni was made up of a talented group of ":not-so" former greats and they gave the current cagers all they could handler. The Alumni roster consisted of: John Walder (2004), Kory Kirschenmann (2004), Ryan Messick (1996), Mark Rinn (2002), Quinn Deide (2003), Mitch Slusarski (1995), Aaron Costello (2002), John Van Beek (1998), Rob Christianson (1995), Justin Mitchell (2003), Clint Allen (2003) and Steve Malone (1983). "You always get good competition (from the SDM Alumni), " Henry said. "They still are very good players. Down the stretch they were a crafty group of guys and they put us in a situation we hadn't been in yet." But in the end, the current Hardrocker team was able to spread it around and attack the basket from a few different angles. Senior Brandon Lord (Taylorsville, Utah) paced the team with 20 points. Junior Andrew Brown (Dickinson, N.D.) cashed in for 12, senior Matt Lyndoe (Custer) put up 11 and senior Casey Schmitz (Williston, N.D.) contributed with 10. For the Alumni, Messick led the way with 15 points, Rinn added 14, Quinn had 13 and Van Beek put up 10. The current team Football The Hardrocker football team took its final trip to North Dakota for the 2006 season, this time traveling to Valley City State to square off with the Vikings. Unfortunately for Mines, the Vikings were just too much, winning the Dakota Athletic Conference game, 40-8. Things were going good for the Hardrockers, holding Valley City to just a touchdown after the first quarter, but the Vikings put up 19 points in the second period and went into the half with a 19-2 lead. The Rockers got on the board after sophomore Kyle Kurth (Pierre, S.D.) blocked an extra point, scooped it up and ran it the length of the field. SDM played some tough ‘D' in the second half, allowing no points in the third quarter, but miscues in the final frame put two more touchdowns on the board for the Vikings. Mines also got into the end zone for the second straight week, as freshman quarterback Jason Beilstein (Lodi, Calif.) hooked up with junior wide out Lukas Munsell (Mills, Wyo., ) from 9-yards out in the fourth quarter. The Rockers tallied 124 yards of total offense to 323 of the Vikings. SDM did have 14 first downs and had a solid day running the ball --- 32 carries for 92 yards. The Vikings had 103 yards rushing on 30 carries. Individually, freshman tailback John Henderson (Long Beach, Calif.) led the ground attack, running the ball 11 times for 42 yards. Munsell led all receivers with 45 total yards on five catches--- which included a long reception of 30 yards. He was followed by Kyle Krajewski (Oshkosh, Neb.), who caught three balls for 29 yards and Henderson had three reception for 18 yards. Beilstein was 12-25 for 113 yards passing and was intercepted three times. Defensively, senior Jake Hahn paced the Hardrockers with seven tackles (four solo and three assisted. Freshman Zach Marcus (Olivia, Minn.) and senior Mike Mule (Billings, Mont.) also had a good efforts, each recording six tackles. Freshman Jarrod Luze (White, S.D.) and freshman Pete Guck (Purham, Minn.) both had an interception in Saturday game. The Hardrockers are still winless in conference play (0-5) and are 1-7 overall on the season. They will take on the Mayville Comets Saturday at 1 p.m. at Dunham Field. Cross Country The SDM men's cross country team finished third in the Dakota Athletic Conference Championship last Friday in Minot, N.D. The ‘Rockers were led by freshman Nate Hicks (Utica, S.D.) with a 15th-place finish (27 minutes and 5 seconds) that earned him All-Conference honors. The top five SDM men finished 29 seconds apart for another excellent pack time. "I thought we were consistent but we didn't run great, " said Hardrocker head coach Jerry Schafer. "Our pack is coming along well, we just need to get them up closer to the front to have an impact." Kyle Kattke (Black Hawk, S.D.) finished 18th in 27:18 followed by senior Shane Hague (New Underwood, S.D.) in 23rd place with a time of 27:33, sophomore Andy Lein of Gordon, Neb., finished 24th, clocking a 27:34, and Colton Reid, a sophomore from Colstrip., Mont., earned 25th in 27:34. Marcus Moor (freshman from Kadoka, S.D.) rounded out the team with a 37th-place finish in 29:07. The Lady rockers had a tough day with Molly Tobin (freshman from Lincoln., Neb.) dropping out after suffering an asthma attack during the race. Samantha Diede (freshman from Huron) ran a consistent race finishing 26th in a time of 21:08. "I was pleased that Sam ran close to her time at Yankton. I think it shows her strength. Now we need to put a little speed on her and see if she can move up in the pack, " Schafer said. "Molly struggled with her breathing, which can happen when you have cool and damp conditions." The Hardrockers return to action Nov. 4, running at the NAIA Region III Championships in Sioux Falls, in an attempt to qualify for the NAIA National Meet later in November. Volleyball The Lady Hardrocker volleyball team split a pair of important DAC matches this past weekend at the King Center, winning over Mayville State, 3-1, Friday night, before falling short to Valley City, 3-2, on Saturday. SDM defeated the Comets 34-36, 30-25, 30-27, 30-28 and had a 2-0 lead before the Vikings rallied back to take the victory, 28-30, 26-30, 30-23, 30-19, 15-9. The split gives the Lady ‘Rockers a 13-8 mark on the season and 4-6 in the conference, putting them fifth in the standings --- the Top 6 will make the DAC tournament at the end of the season. The Hardrockers had a lot of outstanding individual performances in Friday's match. Agnieszka Koperek (junior from Belchatow, Poland) notched 20 kills in the game and made good on 30 of 47 attacks. Sophomore Stephanie Carpio (Yuma, Colo.) was 38-46 on the attack with 13 kills and Katherine Hanson (of Sioux Falls) had 10 kills and was 27-32 on the attack. Rapid City native Jennie Malone (junior) had a stellar night at the line with a 22-22 performance with four aces and Carpio racked up an ace while going 17-20 on the serve. Tessa Howe (sophomore from Omaha, Neb.) continues to impress at the setter position, grabbing 57 assists and had 14 digs. Jenny Hiykel (sophomore from Omaha, Neb.) also had a good night from the libero position, going 51-53 on serve receive and also came up with 12 digs. In Saturday's bout, Koperek had a fine performance, going 20-21 on the serve with an ace, making good on 44-51 attacks and led the team in kills with 18 --- as well as going 25-26 on serve receive. Carpio also put forth another good effort, going 26-29 on the serve with an ace, collected 13 kills and made good on 28-39 attacks and was credited with three assisted blocks. The Hardrockers travels to Jamestown College Saturday to continue DAC play and then will take on Dakota State Saturday in Madison, S.D. |
