TranscriptBy Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- After winning the first two games during Dakota Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon, the South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team came up short after the Valley City State Vikings rallied back from the brink to take the final three frames and win the Dakota Athletic Conference match, 3-2, at Goodell Gymnasium in Rapid City. The Lady Vikings defeated the Hardrockers, 28-30, 26-30, 30, 23, 30, 19, 15-9. The ‘Rockers were very competitive in the first two sets, separating themselves from their North Dakota opponent down the stretch to take the commanding advantage. With the score tied 28-28 in Game 1, two straight points from junior Agnieszka Koperek put Mines over the top and then the second bout was awarded to the home team when Koperek again came up with a big kill shot to put her team up, 28-26. That was followed by a block from sophomore Amanda Cammack (from Sturgis) and then the game was won by a kill from junior and Rapid City native Jennie Malone. Valley City was able to regroup from there, mowing down the Hardrocker in the next three games. The Vikings won the third game by seven points, the fourth game by 11 and the final frame by six. Individually for the Hardrockers, junior transfer Koperek had a fine night, going 20-21 on the serve with an ace, making good on 44-51 attacks and led the team in kills with 18 --- as well as going 25-26 on serve receive. Koperek, originally from Belchatow, Poland, was at Sheridan College in Wyoming before she came to Rapid City. Teammate Stephanie Carpio, a sophomore from Yuma, Colo., also put forth a good effort Saturday, going 26-29 on the serve with an ace, collected 13 kills and made good on 28-39 attacks and was credited with three assisted blocks. The crucial defeat drops the Hardrockers to 4-6 in conference play and 13-8 on the season. Mines faces Chadron on Wednesday in a non-conference bout before returning to DAC action this coming weekend.
