St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 3388 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( April 23, 1997) SDSM& T TO HOST WORKSHOP ON NORTHERN HIGH PLAINS CONVECTIVE STORMS MAY 1- 2 The 1997 Workshop on Northern High Plains Convective Storms will be held May 1- 2 in the Surbeck Center Bump Lounge on the South Dakota Tech campus. The workshop will run from 8: 00 a. m. to 4: 30 p. m., Thursday, May 1, and 8: 30 a. m. to 12: 00 noon, Friday, May 2. The workshop will focus on the forecasting of severe convection on the Northern High Plains and various aspects of current convective research. The event is sponsored by the National Weather Service ( NWS) ; SDSM& T; the Cooperative Program for Operational Meteorology, Education and Training ( COMET); and the South Dakota EpSCOR ( Experimental Program for Stimulation of Competitive Research) program. The workshop will provide an excellent opportunity to bring together National Weather Service, local forecasting officials, faculty, students, and other interested parties to discuss current severe weather research and issues. Individuals from five National Weather Service Offices -- Bismarck, Cheyenne, North Platte, St. Louis, and Rapid City -- and the NEXRAD Operation Support Facility will be giving presentations, along with several Tech faculty and graduate students. The officials from the local NWS office in Rapid City who will be speaking include Andy Bailey, Matthew Bunkers, Brian Klimowski, and Jay Searles. The South Dakota Tech graduate students on the workshop agenda are Trace Bowen ( Meteorology) and Sol J. Brich ( Civil Engineering). Faculty members of the SDSM& T Institute of Atmospheric Sciences who will be speaking include Andy Detwiler, Dick Farley, Mark Hjelmfelt, L. Ronald Johnson, Harry Orville and Paul Smith. Other workshop presenters are: Wendy Schreiber- Abshire, COMET; Mike Modrick, KOTA- TV; Major Barbara Miner, Ellsworth Air Force Base; and Jeff French, University of Wyoming. The workshop is free and open to the public.
