TranscriptBy Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team capped off a long weekend with a non-conference victory over the Dana College Lady Vikings Sunday afternoon at the King Center in Rapid City. The Lady Hardrockers made it a clean sweep on Dana, defeating the Vikings, 3-0 (30-27, 30-26, 30-15). Mines won the previous night, taking down Dakota Athletic Conference foe Minot State before coming up short against the conference's top squad Dickinson State on Friday night. The Blue Hawks were also ranked fifth in the NAIA before the weekend started as well. "It was a long weekend, " said Hardrocker head coach Doug Tabbert. "We are making progress. After assessing all three matches over the last three days, Tabbert felt his team is improving in a lot of areas, but quick decision on defense is what has really shine bright lately. "We are playing more consistently with our defensive effort, " he said. "We are doing better at scrambling and we are just making those tougher defensive plays." The Vikings were able to hang around in the first two games of the match Sunday, but costly mistakes hindered them down the stretch. In Game 1, a hit into the net on the Rockers' game-point put them behind early and then a serve in the net followed by hitting the ball into the net gave the Hardrockers their final two points and a 2-0 match lead. The Hardrockers met little resistence in the final frame, establishing an early lead and cruised the rest of the way for the win. As a team, Mines was 82-88 on the sere with six aces. Rapid City native Jenny Malone was 16-17 from the line with two aces and Agnieszka Koperek (Belchatow, Poland) contributed with a 15-17 performance with one ace. The Lady Rockers made good on 97-118 attacks and tallied 35 kills. Freshman standout Katherine Hanson (Sioux Falls) continues to impress, pacing the offense with a 21-24 effort with 10 kills. Koperek had nine kills and was 25-31 on the attack. Omaha, Neb., native Jenny Hiykel, continued to shine on defense, going 20-20 on serve receive and coming up with 15 digs. Teammate Tessa Howe, also from Omaha, tallied 39 of the team's 40 assists. The win pushes SDM's overall record to 11-5 on the season and are currently fourth in the conference with a 4-3 mark. Next up, the Hardrockers travel up to Spearfish Wednesday for a rivally rematch. Earlier in the season, Black Hills State stole a match in Rapid City.
