Men's and women's basketball will soon be added to the mix as both programs will start their seasons at the end of October. Cross Country The Hardrockers made a short trip up to Spearfish this past weekend to compete at the Yellow Jacket Invite on one of the more difficult courses in the region at the Spearfish Canyon Country Club. With BHSU such a heavy favorite in Region III as well as being ranked nationally, the Hardrockers compared well to their long-time rivals and posted some quality times. On the men's side, SDM junior Kyle Kattke (Black Hawk) clocked the fasted time for his team, taking 12th place in a time of 22 minutes and 5.48 seconds. Teammate Nate Hicks (freshman from Utica) was a couple spots back in 15th place in a time of 22:11.55, Colton Reid (sophomore from Colstrip, Mont., ) finished 18th in a time of 22:21.83, Shane Hauge (senior from New Underwood) was right behind with a 22:47.02 for 19th place and Marcus Moor (freshman from Kadoka) had a 21st-place finish in a time of 22:57.13. On the women's side, the Hardrockers had just two participants. Samatha Diede (freshman from Huron) came in 11th place in a time of 18:16.71 and teammate Molly Tobin (freshman from Lincoln, Neb.) finished 16th after clocking a 19:09.80. Next up the Hardrockers make a trek East River to compete in the Mt. Marty Invitational in Yankton. That race features a large number of teams and should benefit the Hardrocker harriers as the season begins to wind down. Football The Hardrocker football team suffered another lopsided defeat, this time falling to the Jamestown College Jimmies, 57-0, this past Saturday in North Dakota. The loss also was the third straight in which the young SDM group failed to score any points. The Jimmies converted 26 first downs while Mines had just four. The Jimmies also racked up 405 rushing yards on the day, while the Rockers ended the game with 0 due mainly to a stifling Jimmie defense. Mines did have 67 passing yards. Individually, freshman Pete Rausch (Big Stone, S.D.) led the rushing attack, netting 14 yards on three carries, while the rest of the ball carries had no or negative gains. Freshman quarterback Jason Beilstein (Lodi, Calif.) ended the day completing 9-19 passes for 67 yards with two interceptions. The longest pass was to Chad Price, (sophomore from Pierce, Neb.) for 22 yards. But it was sophomore Kyle Krajewski (OshKosh, Neb.) that had the most reception yards, hauling in three catches for 28 yards. Defensively, sophomore linebacker Chad Westendorf (Geddes, S.D.) tallied another interception in the game. He had two last week against Black Hills State and had one in the Haskell game earlier in the season. He also added five solo and three assisted tackles for a total of eight. Defensive back Kyle Kurth (junior Pierre, S.D.) paced the defense with 12 tackles. He had eight solo and four assisted tackles on the day. Senior Mike Mule (Billings, Mont.) also had a good defensive effort with five solo tackles and three assisted. The Hardrockers now fall to 1-5 on the season and 0-3 in Dakota Athletic Conference action and will welcome Dakota State this weekend. Volleyball The South Dakota School of Mines volleyball team finished the midpoint of its season and began the second half of Dakota Athletic Conference play this last week, traveling to Spearfish to take on Black Hills State. The Hardrockers were in somewhat of a slump, as the Yellow Jackets swept Mines, 3-0. BHSU defeated the Hardrockers, 30-27, 31-29, 30-25. Individually, Tessa Howe (sophomore from Omaha, Neb.) who was the DAC Setter of the Week for the last two weeks as well as being named the NAIA Region III Setter of the Week this past week, had an impressive match tallying 37 assists and was 17-17 on the serve with one ace. As a team, the Hardrockers were 72-77 with five aces for the match. Junior transfer Agniezka Koperek (Belchatow, Poland) led the offense, making good on 38-41 attacks with 12 kills. The team tallied 41 total kills and was 129-151 on the attack. Sophomore libero Jenny Hiykel (Omaha, Neb.) continues to be the defensive specialist racking up 23 of the team's 65 digs and went a perfect 37-37 on serve receive. As a team, the Lady Rockers were 83-85. The loss dropped Mines to 3-5 in the conference and 11-6 overall. To make the post-season conference tournament, SDM has to be in the top 6 in the DAC standings. They are currently tied for fifth with Mayville State. Next up, the Hardrockers travel to Nebraska this weekend for matches with Nebraska-Kerney on Friday and York, Neb., on Saturday. Basketball The Mines men's and women's basketball team officially kicked off the 2006-07 season this past week, holding the third annual Basketball Bash Oct. 4 at 10:55 p.m. in Goodell Gym. A nice size crowd that was on hand were introduced to all players on both teams, and then were treated to inter-league play, as well as crowd-participation contests a three-point contest between the men's and women's team and the night was capped off by the always popular slam-dunk contest. Senior Brandon Fredrickson (Fort Collins, Colo.) defended his 2005 crown, defeating Brandon Smith (sophomore from Amenia, N.D.) in the final round. This year's winning dunk saw Fredrickson jump over teammate Chris Hurd (freshman from Rapid City). The men's team begins it season Oct. 21 with the alumni game and then will take on Rocky Mountain College Oct. 27. The women begin play Oct. 29 against Great Falls Mont. |
