St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( May 8, 1997) SDSM& T TO HOST 1997 WATER FESTIVAL ON MAY 13TH/ OVER 1000 FOURTH GRADERS TO PARTICIPATE IN ACTIVITIES Over 1000 area fourth- graders will be attending the 1997 Water Festival being hosted by South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on Tuesday, May 13th. The event begins at 8: 30 a. m. and runs until 2: 00 p. m. This is the third year SDSM& T has hosted the Water Festival, which is an environmental education program directed to fourth graders. Forty- six fourth grade classes from fifteen area schools will participate in a quiz bowl and at least three 20- minute presentations related to some aspect of non- point pollution, water quality and other environmental issues. Schools from Box Elder, Black Hawk, Hermosa, Piedmont, Sturgis and Rapid City will be participating. All of the fourth- graders will compete in the quiz bowl, which will be held throughout the day in Rooms 204 E& 204W in the Didier Education Center ( Classroom Building). Six major prizes will be awarded to the winners, and every student will receive a water bottle for participating in the quiz bowl. Students will have an opportunity to take part in a wide variety of fun hands- on activities, including aquatic insects in Rapid Creek, stream gauging on Rapid Creek, water filtration, water chemistry, weather forecasting, and oil spill cleanup — to name a few. Several displays also will be set up in the Surbeck Center. Individuals presenting the 26 programs are from Ag in the Classroom; Bureau of Reclamation; Dakota Angler & Outfitter; EROS Data Center; Institute of Atmospheric Sciences; Keep Rapid City Beautiful; Lawrence County Conservation District; National Weather Service; Natural Resource and Conservation Service; Project Learning Tree; Rapid City Community Development; Rapid City Water Reclamation; Rushmore Cave; South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources; South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks; South Dakota Lakes & Streams Association, South Dakota School of Mines & Technology; South Dakota Solid Waste Association; U. S. Geological Survey; and Wharf Resources. The Water Festival is funded by the Environmental Protection Agency through the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources, along with state agencies and local businesses. Norwest Bank is the major corporate sponsor of several Water Festivals which are held throughout South Dakota. Black Hills State University will be hosting a Water Festival the preceding day, May 12th. Dr. Scott Kenner, Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering is the SDSM& T campus coordinator for this event.
