The SDSMT women's team hosted the 2006 Lady Hardrocker Classic in which Black Hills State, Rocky Mountain College of Billings, Mont., and California's Menlo College were apart of. The Mines team came away with two victories beating both the Rocky Mountain Bears as well as the Menlo Lady Oaks. The men's also made it's first appearance at the King Center in two weeks taking on a very disciplined Montana Tech squad. Persistence paid off for the Hardrockers who made a late scoring surge in the second half to notch the win. Women's Basketball The Lady Hardrockers looked sharp on their home floor last weekend. After coming up short in a tournament a week early in Billings, South Dakota Mines got another crack at Rocky Mountain College where they came away with a 67-64 victory. In the first installment on Nov. 10, the Lady Bears won, 74-67. On Friday the Lady Hardrockers were able to get off to a fast start and led for a majority of the contest. At the half, Mines enjoyed an eight-point advantage, 39-31 and then was able to keep the edge in the second half. The 2005 Dakota Athletic Conference MVP Melanie Vedvie (junior from Lake Preston) proved why she earned that title leading South Dakota School of Mines with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Teammate and fellow junior Amber DeWeerd (Rock Valley, Iowa) also put forth a good effort, cashing in for 12 points while freshmen post players Bethany Holyoak (Moorcroft, Wyo.) and Leah Sundby (Williston, N.D.) both contributed with nine points. In Saturdays bout, the Hardrockers faced a tough Menlo College team that was ranked 12th in the NAIA Division II preseason polls, but the Lady Oaks proved to be no match for the Hardrockers who hung a 20-point loss on the visitors, 74-54. South Dakota Mines led pretty much the entire game again, and had the edge at the half, 29-24. They were able to turn up the pressure in the second period, outscoring Menlo, 45-30. Individually Mines saw some outstanding performances from a number of players. Vedvie again paced the Hardrockers with 16 points and nine rebounds while DeWeerd had a 14-point game. Rapid City junior Jennie Malone put up 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds while Holyoak contributed with 13 points and six rebounds. With the two victories, South Dakota Mines improves to 3-4 on the season and will see action at home this weekend, taking on Northwestern, Iowa, Friday at 4 p.m. followed by a Saturday afternoon game (2 p.m.) against University of Sioux Falls. Men's Basketball The South Dakota School of Mines men's team returned to the friendly confines of Goodell Gymnasium last week after competing the week before in a high-powered tournament in Azusa Calif. And it turned out to be a nice homecoming for the Hardrockers, defeating Montana Tech, 62-55. The Orediggers, who had seven seniors in the lineup, were a very patient and determined unit as they milked as much time off the clock as possible, resulting in the low score. At the half, the Hardrockers held a one-point advantage, 27-26. Individually, the Rockers got some exception play out of junior Andrew Brown (Dickinson, N.D.) and freshman Robbie Fedor (Monticello, Minn.) as both chipped in for 11 points to lead the team.Casey Schmitz (senior from Williston, N.D.) also had a good night with 10 points. The Hardrockers will next see action this weekend at the US Bank Thanksgiving Classic in Rapid City. Mines takes on Haskell Indian Nations University (Neb.) Friday night at 8 p.m. followed by a 6 p.m. game Saturday against Johnson and Wales University (Kan.). |
