| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- After soaking up the sun in California last weekend, the South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team return to the friendly confines of Goodell Gymnasium for a non-conference bout with the Montana Tech Orediggers Saturday at 5 p.m. The Hardrockers traveled out west to compete in the Tip-Off tournament hosted by Azusa-Pacific a week ago. While there, SDM faced two of the premier NAIA Division I teams in the Azusa Cougars, as well as the Concordia University (California) Eagles. Both were ranked in the preseason NAIA polls. The Hardrockers competed hard against their opponents but fell short in both outings. ���We played some top-notch teams out in California and they kind of took it to us but we didn't have a couple guys because of injuries, " said Hardrocker head coach Jason Henry. Both Andrew Brown (junior from Dickinson, N.D.) and Brandon Smith (sophomore from Amenia, N.D.) received minor injuries during the two-day event. Brown sprained his ankle before the start of the first game (vs. Azusa-Pacific) and was out for that game and good potion of the next, while Smith had a deep thigh bruise in Game 1 and was unable to play in the second contest against the Eagles. Henry said that both should be ready to go Saturday however against a senior laden Oredigger group. Montana Tech rosters seven seniors, three juniors and three sophomores. On paper, they seem to be a very experienced, battled tested team, but the Orediggers are under the direction of first-year head coach Nate Larson. "They have a new coach and a new style of play as far as offensive stuff, " Henry said. "They definitely have some experience there and some guys that have been there for a couple years. A lot of those kids are transfer kids, but having a new system could make things a little bit different for them." Montana Tech is also somewhat of a guard driven team, having faster smaller guards and forwards that are fairly accurate on the perimeter. "They have some pretty good players, " Henry said. "They have some good wings and some great guards that are shooting the ball very well right now." With quicker players the Orediggers may have an advantage of finding the open look and knocking down a lot of points. "It is going to be a key for us to find their shooters, " Henry said. "We will have a size advantage on them and we have to take advantage of it." Each team's personnel could create mismatches for either side, where as a taller Hardrocker could have difficulty matching up with a smaller, quicker Oredigger. "But then again they have to guard us when we have (our taller players) on the floor, " the coach added. Henry hopes to mix his rotation around and get an evenly matched crop of players on the court, but also said that some of his bigger athletes, like Smith and Matt Lyndoe (senior from Custer) are up to the challenge. And with such a group of fast, experienced players, one would assume that Montana Tech is an up-tempo team that likes to run and gun --- wrong. The Orediggers actually are a very slow-paced team, similar to Princeton's style of play. "They are not an up-tempo team. They will pressure the basketball a little bit --- the wings not as much. They will use 30 seconds of shot clock if you let them, " Henry said. "We need to make sure that we get some transition buckets and get up and down the floor. But again, we have to be patient too, otherwise we will be playing defense for three quarters of the game if we are not careful. "They just want you to guard them for a long period of time." And as conference play is still a month and a half away, Henry said that this is the time when he tweaks his lineup and iron out all the wrinkles. And between now and then, most of that will have to be done on the road as the Hardrockers will be gone the whole month of December. "We are excited for this weekend to be back home. We only have this weekend and then Thanksgiving before we go on the road for a whole month, " Henry said. "If anybody wants to come watch us play, its got to be now or January." |
